I'll have to thank the person who pointed me in the direction of you all. The page jd066 pointed me at is excellently written. Sorry I didn't find it on my own, but at least I have a spot to thank you all for the help. :) I'm currently copying data off of the old system. It's quite a relief.

Thanks again for your excellent information and help. :)

See the article at http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/
It lists how to mount the file system anyway.

I suppose some of you might recognize me from the 'Win98 drive limit' post. A coworker nudged me that I'd not actually looked at the boot sequence for the system that crashed, so I rather sheepishly found that the CD-ROM bootm indeed came after the HD boot.

Ubuntu won't mount any of the drives it found, however. When I view the details of the failure, the text is difficult to read due to new-line errors but the basic idea is:

Mount is denied because NTFS is marked to be in use. Choose one action ... etc.

Does anyone have advice on what the problem could be and how I can get Ubuntu to mount my old DOS/Win drives so I can recover data from them?
