Dear Supermansghost,

I am glad to inform you that I have resolved my issue thanks to a post I came accross in Windows Vista Community: Discussions Groups

Here it is:

----
The "restore defaults" option fixes the problem (nothing else does). However,
while doing this I discovered where the bug is that caused the trouble in the
first place. It appears that when Vista does its initial index (of the
default locations) it gets confused if you try and add a location (I store
all my stuff in c:\data so I wanted to index this too) before the initial
index has been built. You must wait for Vista to finish making the first
index BEFORE you modify the index locations otherwise the indexing service breaks.
When I tried to change the index locations after a reset it broke the
indexing. When I reset it again but this time allowed the inital indexing to
work, everything was fine.
----

Now everything is fine with me, too.

No. I don't have any offline folders. As I said in my post the Start Menu search function is working like a charm. I am having problems with Outlook of which I just have rebuilt its index. And you know what? The indexing status shows 21 items(that just
came in)remaining to be indexed and ignores those, 1900, already in-house.

I guess I am going to give it up.

I've not had too many problems with this, but it does seem to reindex every so often for no good reason.

You can try rebuilding the index fully from scratch by going into the indexing options in control panel.

Do you have passwords assigned to the personal folders?

is not working as expected and results are appalling.

I tried the following:

1)Unchecked/rechecked the Personal folders box in the search options dialog window four times to get indexing to start afresh. In two occasions it started indexing from scratch by itself.

2)Left pc on overnight for a whole week.

I believe the problem is with Outlook's indexing. It just says the number of items remaining to be indexed when you check the status but this number keeps going up over time. It never decreases.

The funniest thing though is that the moment I delete some items or empty the deleted items folder and then check the status, I see these are added up to the number of files to be indexed.

Currently it says 2990 items remaining to be indexed when I barely reach 1800.

Vista Desktop Search instead is working pretty well.

Does anyone have any idea?
