bg, I am glad you did solve the problem but I am quite sure that I understand how. Can you give me a hint. It does not sound that resetting the router all the time was the solution.

OK, for the last day my laptop & desktop are both on & off the internet at different times. it seems when i get the laptop connecting to the internet then my desktop will not connect. usually unpluging and repluging my router solves the problem but that got old after 5 or 6 times. then the same procedure seems to come up with my printer. I HAVE NOW SOLVED THE PROBLEMS.

Edit by mod- glad you solved the problem though

@bg, Interesting that you say that because I have exactly the same problem. The desktop printer that I (actually the wife) used to share from the laptop gives me the "off line" answer now too. I have not yet spent much time on debugging the problem. Was playing around a little with the firewalls, but that did not help. I suggest that whoever finds the solution first will post it - that is the best I can think of right now.

whs, you were right. i purchased a d-link rangebooster n usb adapter and i can now get on line wirelessly. but, now i cannot get my printer which is attached to my desktop to print from my laptop. it is a great hp usb printer and of course it works perfectly from my desktop. my laptop keeps telling me that my printer is off line and i have not figured out how to get it on line. oh yes, i have also uninstalled and reinstalled the printer software on my laptop and my printer is set as the default printer on my laptop and desktop. any suggestions?

On mine everything was working properly too - at least it said so. But the light next to the WiFi switch in the front stayed amber (in lieu of blue - for ON) - so I suspect the switch as the culprit. Check that, if you have that switch too (ON is towards the left) - I just assume the HP's are alike - mine is a dv6000. If it really does not work, get a USB WiFi stick - that's what I did. Repairing the laptop is a pain, because you have to send it to HP. Maybe you also want to call HP technical support 1-800-474-6836. They may have diagnostic programs in the BIOS like DELL. I have never checked that on the HP.

yes it works on the ethernet but not on the WiFi. it is a hp laptop model # hp pavilion dv9817cl notebook that is only 60 days old. when i go into device manager and click on the "NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller" and then click on "Atheros AR5007 802./11b/g WiFi Adapter" they both tell me that they are working properly and that they have the latest driver software. so, do you still think it is a bad adapter or just some settings in my computer that have gotten screwed up. if it is the settings, i don't have the slightest idea what & where to look and how to fix it. any advise would be appreciated. p.s. - i originally stated that all this happend after we had a storm come through - i forgot that we turrned off and unplugged the laptop before the storm hit.

If it works on the ethernet but not on the WiFi, chances are your WiFi is broken. Just had this last week on my HP laptop. Went out and bought a USB WiFi stick and everything came back to normal. These USB sticks are not expensive (+/- $20).

Problem sounds like it might be more with the laptop itself. Check the hardware settings
>>Control Panel>>System>>Hardware>>Device Manager...
Try reinstalling the wireless network card driver...
I have had storm related surges blow cabled network cards before
i suppose it is possible to do the same with a wireless card...
If above doesnt work,, borrow the network cable from your desktop and
contact to laptop, go to the laptop's manufacturer's site and if
they have any information to offer you...

The same thing happens to my laptop, (similar setup to yours)..
The router may need to be "rebooted" there usually isnt an on/off switch
so you will need to unplug the power from the router>>> wait a few seconds and then plug
the power back in >> Go to your laptop and reconnect to the internet..
If this does not work then you may need to reboot both the router and the modem..
Remove the power plugs from both>>> wait a few seconds >> then plug the power back into the
modem first, wait for all the lights to come back then >>> replug the router...
That should do it....

Does your WiFi work. Do you have a globe on the double screens in the Vista notification area or is there a red X on this double screen (near the clock and loudspeaker icon).
