With system restore you need not unplug anything. The recovery process should take 15 to 30 minutes maximum depending on your system. Just go where the picture says and pick your restore point. Don't click several times - have patience and wait for the Recovery Wizard.

I would say before a recovery you could try:

1) Reset all IE settings in Internet Options -> Advanced -> under "Reset internet explorer settings" click the Reset button. Shown here:
http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/image76.png

2) Try System Restore to roll back to a time when it was working.

If none of this works -- not even the answer from Microsoft's KB for this exact problem -- then maybe you should do a system recovery.

None of your advice solved the problem.

Any other ideas instead of going through the hassle of a recovery session? thnx

Twiggy, hi and welcome. Here is the Microsoft KB solution:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/556052

And here is a long discussion from various folks with the same problem:

That is strange twiggy. But try something else. Go to Tools > Manage add-ons > Enable or Disable Add-ons > and there disable anything that only remotely looks like MSN. Then restart IE and tell us what happens.
