If you have any trouble with Opera, you can go to the Opera Forum . These people are very helpful.

Yes, definitely stick with a well known browser. It's also important to download it from a trusted source. When you can, get it from the developer's website. For Firefox, go to http://www.mozilla.com/firefox and for Opera go to http://www.opera.com

When you say Avant messed up your system, I expect that you mean that the installation caused problems. For that problem, you can never really be safe from possible software conflicts or bad installs. To mitigate this issue, it would be best to use the most popular of browsers -- IE or FF. With tens of millions of people having installed the same browser, chances are higher that someone has already seen the issues you have and any conflicts have been resolved or documented.

No popular browser should screw up your system. And any answer you may receive is subjective, so try them all and pick one or more you like.
Avant, IE, Opera, Firefox, etc. are all 'safe', though some would argue to varying degrees.
