That neat little utility ("DzSoft Favorites Search") I've been using . . . and it's been over a week now and still no glitches, no system slow down, etc. . . produces hits based on any word you can remember that's in either what you've named it or the URL.

For example, a lot of us don't remember Gibson Research Corporation (GRC), but rather Steve Gibson. A search on either "Steve" or "Gibson" comes up with the GRC URL. Slick . . .

And the free antivirus tool by McAfee named "STINGER" is another bookmark that I have. I've never used it myself, but have had times when I've wanted to give friends the URL (which is a lot more than just "Stinger"). But a search with DzSoft Favorites Search on just "Stinger" produces the URL. Cool . . .

You know, you can search for your favorites right from the address bar...

[edit] I just noticed, you can only search by typing in the first characters of the name itself... not nearly as useful as full text search.

Geek,

AFAIK, Windows XP HE (which I use) does NOT have the capability that Vista has for Favorite searches.

whs,

I did indeed find a Favorites Search utility, and it's called "DzSoft Favorites Search" and can be found at http://www.dzsoft.com/favorites-search.html. It's FREE, which makes it all the more satisfying. It installs as an IE7 add-on, and can be accessed through View>Explorer Bar. It's pretty slick.

I've only had it for a day, but it does in fact do what it's advertised to do. You can see my review on CNET at http://www.download.com/DzSoft-Favorites-Search/3000-12773_4-10052071.html?tag=lst-1&cdlPid=10651457. It's the one dated 16 July 2008, and I forgot to leave a screen name on it.

I did find "Compass", but it has some bad reviews, plus it's a paid version now (was FREE when I had it). If I'm going to pay for something, I want it to be flawless. I'm a little more tolerant when it comes to FREE stuff. By the way, I haven't found any flaws in DzSoft Favorites Search yet.

Here's how to do it on Vista, at least:

Open up your Favorites folder by browsing down to your user folder and then into Favorites. Paste the following into the search box on the upper right-hand corner, which will search for all bookmarks created in the last 108 years:

date:>1/1/1900

Click the Save Search button, and save the file as something helpful like "Search Favorites". This should create a shortcut that you can open, which will display all of your favorites.

Then you can simply search using the box in the upper right-hand corner.

I should write this up.

BobJam, if you find one, let me know. I have the same problem with over 1000 entries. Sometimes it takes me forever to find something because I do not remember the subject under which I have originally stored the bookmark.

Does anybody know of a search utility that's specific to searching in your IE Favorites for either a URL, a partial name, or whatever name you bookmarked it under??

Years ago I had one like that, but I was using Netscape, and I can't remember what it was called . . . "Compass" it was I think.

It would be very useful because I have a lot of bookmarks, and I'm frequently going all through them looking for what I want. I do have then categorized, but sometimes the category I think I have it in it's not.

For example, the other day I was looking for Steve Gibson's site, and I thought I had it in the "Troubleshooting" category, but I finally found it in my "Security" category.
