The secret are Turbo Diesels. Even big cars like BMW and Mercedes get 40 miles to the gallon. I have a van with space like a house and get 42MPG. Why, it has a small engine. In the US, where there are speed limits everywhere, no car would need more than 60HP. That's what my car has and it runs 90+MPH. At $9 per gallon you have no option - unless you are rich.
