ScottW, here it's the effort and attention that counts. Not neccessarily the result. But I am still puzzled about what could have possibly turned the power off since this card reader had never been used before it stalled.

whs, that's how it works, alright. If you use safely remove on your card reader, the whole thing goes away. Eject is the way to go instead.

It's nice of you to thank those of us who tried to help you and failed miserably. :-P

To close this subject I like to report that my SD card reader works again - without any physical intervention. I think what had happened is that the power was cut off and with a reboot (which I very rarely do) the power was turned on again. I know that using "Safely Remove" on the SD card reader will turn the power off. That's why one should use "Eject" or just pull the card. In my case it must have been another cause because I had never used the card reader before. What was also funny is that it processed the first card without problems, but when I put the card in a second time, it all of a sudden loaded the device driver (little balloon said so) - go figure.
On this occasion I like to thank everybody who has tried to help with their inputs.

You're working on a TARDIS? Cool! Where, or when, will you go first?

Oh, wait. You mean you have a card reader that attaches to the 1394 connector on the motherboard. What brand of card reader is it?

Lighthouse: Well, he did say he was going to see *the* Doctor. "Who" else could it be? :)

Also, have you seen a card reader that connects *only* to the 1394 connectors? Or, would that be in addition to the USB connector. I have never seen one that runs just off of 1394.

whs, sorry I didn't show it from the top (too long) but you have to expand the "ACPI x86" section, then "Microsoft ACPI", then "PCI bus", and so on. Also, expand the UMBus section -- it would be interesting if the card reader showed up there but not on the USB hub.

Inside the case (yes, I opened it!) there is a cable running from the card reader to a connector on the motherboard that can supply 2 USB connectors. If that cable isn't connected properly, you won't see the card reader in devmgmt.

Personally, I'd rather have the 2 USB ports. I've been casually on the lookout for a motherboard header to 2 USB port slot cover cable.

while in Device Manager expanded to 'Show Hidden Devices', remove and insert the SD card to determine which catagory it fits in. Mine is under 'Disk Drives'. When inserted, is there any yellow icon?

(Yes, I know you know this, just double checking ;) )

whs, I have a similar setup on my Acer Aspire desktop. In Device Manager, select view by connection and the card reader devices will show up under a USB root hub and on the UMBus as shown:

He wanted me to open it up and then call them. I guess he wants me to operate under their "Guidance". Well, If nothing helps, they have to send a technician on site. But I figure that is their last resort.
