I respectfully disagree with my fellow geek, whs, that an AMD 4800+ is faster than an Intel Q6600. I won't say that benchmarks prove everything, but clearly the Tom's Hardware benchmark shows the Q6600 is faster than the 4800+ on anything you want to do -- games, video encoding, image filters, audio compression, synthetic benchmarks, and so on.

Further discussion of Intel vs AMD procs will be taken to this thread:

The big advantage of the AMD is the faster FSB. The 6000+ runs a little hot. I would settle for the 5600+. I find the AMD's faster than the Intels - have 2 of each in comparable setups. E.g. my 4800+ beats my Q6600 hands down. With the tests you have to be careful. Make sure their setup compares to what you are going to do.

These processors look to be very close in performance. The passmark CPU test shows the Intel E6550 just edging out the AMD 6000+ but the margin is small:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/common_cpus.html

The CPU benchmark charts at Tom's Hardware let you pick from many different benchmarks and add and remove CPUs from the list. Very thorough, but also complicated:
http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/processors/3d-studio-max-9,369.html

In some tests the AMD wins, others the Intel. It looks to me like these 2 processors are roughly equivalent, performance wise. So, you can make your decision based on other factors. Good luck.

I don't know too much about processors either but I tried to google it before I bought mine:

I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5600+ 2.8ghz. So the one below yours, and I picked mine over a Intel too. In your case, in pure processing speed, the AMD is a fair bit better than the Intel. When I was researching on google before I bought mine, It said that my AMD in particular was better at all types of computing tasks, except gaming, than Intel. So that's why I chose my AMD, despite being a gamer. I don't plan on playing Crysis with full specs, and so a processor of this calibre can cope with most high end games fairly well. (on top of having a £200 gfx card =D).
But like I said, I'm no processor expert =p and I just found this (was the first page on google haha) http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

And it seems that the Processors you are comparing, the Intel is better. So yeah...the choice is yours =p.

Just stumbled across this too : http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-362-1.htm
It's directly linked to you, aso just flick through and look at the charts (at least that's what I did).
And I take that back about Crysis, my AMD seemed to perform well on the gaming test =pp.

i am setting up a computer and have to pick between to cpu's
either AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ 3.0GHz
or INTEL Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33GHz

i don't know to much about processors but i hear that intel is best but in these two the AMD seem to be best
