It does the backups in the background. It took about 2 hours to backup 800mb worth of small jpg and gifs, on my (allegedly) 3mbit DSL. If you have a Windows Smartphone or Blackberry the service becomes a bit more interesting. Tho the mobile software is a bit weak right now it's still pretty cool, and I've been assured new versions are being created w/ extra features. It's kind of like Mozy, but they've thrown in syncing, web access and mobile backups. I like that there's an OS X client (as I'm an OS X person) but of course there's a Windows client too. And a Linux client is in the works.

Even with DSL... it would take a long time to back up the first time, but it's not like those files are going to change constantly... it'll only backup the changes.

OK, agree. For the people on the move that makes a lot of sense. But I was always wondering about the backup aspect of those sites. Ghost does have the option to backup to a remote site - but I am sure your ISP won't like you if you use it. So I guess the best use is for smaller files like Word files etc. Because pictures can get very large too - like my total is 2.5GB's. No problem with the 30GB, but with the DSL.
PS: Sorry Ross I am starting a big discussion about your generous offer. But I was always wondering how those sites are really being used.

edit: geek got to it before i did

I don't think it's meant for backing up your entire drive, it's meant for backing up your documents and important files, and then being able to either access them online, or sync them to another computer.

It's useful for somebody that computers in more than one location, but would like to use the files in both places. It's also useful for people that are mobile a lot but would like to access their documents from anywhere.

Nice and thank you Ross. But how realistic is it to backup via the DSL. I made 2 Ghost system backups to my backup disk, and already have 71.5GB's. That would take days to transfer. Or am I missing something?

Thanks Geek you're awesome, but you knew that already.

Also it might be worth mentioning - your chances of winning are pretty good as no one has entered yet, and the contest ends in 18'ish hours.

My good friend Ross over at SimpleHelp is running a contest giving away two sugarsync accounts for free. SugarSync is an online PC/Mac backup and sync tool... your files are automatically backed up to their server, and can be sync'd to multiple machines. Additionally, you can access those files from anywhere via their website, or even through your mobile device.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Here are the contest details (Copied from the post):

Sign up for a free 10GB 45 day SugarSync account (doesn’t require a credit card or anything like that, the signup is actually quite painless). Give SugarSync a try.

Then come back here and leave a comment with a feature you’d like to see added. If you have more than one feature request, put them all in the same comment. For multiple feature requests, you’ll be entered into the draw twice. And what do the winners get? A one-year, 30GB SugarSync account - for free. That’s a $49.99 value, just for requesting new features. The added bonus is that every one of the feature requests will be emailed by me to SugarSync - and they’ll actually be considered. I’ll pick two random winners on Friday, May 30th at 9:00AM EST.
-------------------------------------------------------------

You can head over to his site for the links to get the download, and then make sure you leave a useful and friendly How-To Geek style comment about your thoughts, and new features for the app. You might also think about subscribing to his site... he's got really good articles.

http://www.simplehelp.net/2008/05/21/simple-help-contest-win-a-30gb-annual-sugarsync-account/

[edit]: Make sure you leave the comments over at SimpleHelp to be entered into the contest.
