Keyboard hasn't played up in the past hour ... maybe that's fixed??? Would be very very nice!

And yes I'm Dutch and in The Netherlands.

I got three extra sets of cartridges to go with my new printer as a one time offer, so I'm good for some time if I don't 'test' too much :)

Well I am glad you may have made at least some progress. Do I gather that you are in the Netherlands? About the budget problem I know what you are talking about. I just got PC #4 (a neat Quad core) and printer #5. But that stuff is in 3 different locations. That's what you get from moving around all the time.
For the printer ink cartridges you must shop around. Especially in Europe there are a lot of good options. That is one of the few items (besides USB flash drives and SD cards) that are cheaper in Europe than in the US.

That's funny - I checked those language settings in the beginning when I just got the computer, but then there was only Dutch - Vs International. Now there were three. Besides this one also English (UK) and English (VS). I have deleted them so I have only Dutch - VS International (that's what the computerwizzes at my work said I should have and what worked on my Win98), so maybe it is solved now? I'll let you know in a couple of days:)

Good idea about the printer, but I'm not buying anything for a long time to come. Spent way too much already! It will take me a couple of months to recover from getting me this beauty with all it's quircks (and off course I'm one that just can't leave be - I háve to have it fixed and it keeps nagging me if it's not perfect. LOL)

Ya, I had some keyboard problems too - but mine were different than yours. Since I installed SP1, they seem to have disappeared. Your problem may have to do with a language setting. If you have more than only English in the language settings, it may switch the keyboard setting (don't ask me why). I have observed that because I have one of my systems set to 3 languages. Look into the Notification Area whether it shows a language setting there. I suspect this, because the special characters are on very different keys depending on the language.
For your print problem - if you really print a lot you may want to consider a laser printer. A black and white laser printer comes for $99 these days and in the long run they are a lot cheaper for bulk printing - even though the initial investment into the print cartridge is quite substantial (the printer off the shelf comes only with a "starter cartridge" - usually good for 1000 pages.

I must say all these little issues sometimes make me feel like just to format C:\
and reïnstall the lot. Get my darn mht-files back too ... Grumble grumble grumble ...

(Edit: that worked wonders on my Win98 when everything got jammed up - but would it help me in any way here ????)

I wonder about the economic setting too, but otherwise there is not much point to taking the trouble. I would still have to use a work around, because I print a lot of text and I would spend far too much ink otherwise, for something that really doesn't need fancy printing.

Shouldn't there be a trema?
Brings me to another problem: when Vista gets tired (so it seems anyway LOL) all of a sudden my keyboard layout acts up. - becomes / and ? becomes = and so on. Closing the afflicted app and starting it again mostly solves it. It mainly happens in Windows Mail, MSN and on sites like these. Only once in a while it happens in Word.
I've checked the keyboard settings (already a couple of months ago) and all should be well, but this keeps popping up from time to time.

That might work assuming Revo finds all the nits and lice of the old driver. After uninstalling with Revo (and before installing the new driver) I would also make a CCleaner run (both registry and system) to cleanup any corpses. I am not so sure about venturing into this "economic setting" again. This triggered the problem in the first place.
PS: Funny, you have a trema over one "i".

There were some comments lost in the time I was writing;-)

I have undone the economic setting, but it doesn't help, so I reenabled it, because it does work with everything else and it really speeds up printing.

I was just thinking, maybe completely uninstalling the printer using Revo and then reïnstalling it might be an option. Next time I'll set the economic settings through the control panel and then I shouldn't have a problem.
Is that a logic train of thought or would I be wasting my time?

Sarah, I don't know whether you read the last sentence in my posting of 5 minutes ago. But I would give it another try with HP especially asking where this "economic print" setting can be undone.

Thanks Whs, but as Jd2066 says, I already started a topic for it. I have found a workaround, but it keeps nagging at my mind, when things don't work like they should. And my mother has the same installation of Word97 (including my normal.dot, so it's the same for me to work with, whether I'm at home or at her place) and on her laptop the printer works perfectly. And before I changed the setting of the printer to economic printing it worked for me too ... :(
Had I not done that it would probably have been environmentally safer, because I've spent a fortune printing testpages when the HP people 'helped' me. LOL.

jd, thanks for the link. Really looks like something very special with the old Word version. I guess downward compatibility has it's limits. It is strange though because as far as I know the filetypes for Word 97 and Word 03 are the same (.doc). But it looks like the cause of the problem is her initial "economic print" setting. This apparently got hammered into stone and even later driver updates did not reset it. A system restore at the time would have helped - but for that it is probably too late now. I would suggest she talk to HP to find out how to reset this "economic print" setting - probably some stray bit in the registry.

When I first got it 13 months ago I would have rated it 2/10
After upgrading to 2Gb ram I gave it 7/10 (which shows how much insufficient ram cam spoil an OS)
After some of the later Updates and then SP1 I now I give it 10/10
It is extremely stable now.

If my mht files would behave normally and I could get PSP XL going my satisfactionrate would be a 10.
I love the way things look and now I've found the Geek I know how to customize things to fit my needs.
But not being able to run my main program is a real bummer and not being able to print in Word doesn't improve my spirits too. What good is a computer if it doesn't do what you got it for in the first place? So I'll end up on a 2 :(

You're missing my point. I did have lots of errors back to the left on that chart where you can't see. My stability index was down to 4.83 and there were red X's all over the place. A 4.83 stability index is 48% -- that's miserable. Would you fly on a plane that had a 48% stability index? I wouldn't. Second, it wasn't luck that got Vista running better but work. I learned as much as I could and used the available tools, such as Problem Reports and Solutions to find out what was wrong and fix it.

I know from experience that XP can become rundown, gunked up, and unstable if you don't keep it tuned up or if you install poorly written drivers and apps. So, now that things are running well for me, I hang out on this forum to help others who are still learning or having trouble. I feel sympathy for anyone having OS trouble because I've been there, too.

I give Vista a 5 - Satisfied on your scale. Since I got Vista, I have been learning about it and working to optimize it on my system. Heck, learning about Vista is what brought me to this website. Today I have a reliability index of 9.59 out of 10! That's up from an all-time low around 5. No, it's not a perfect OS, but at least it gives me tools to measure reliability and read more detailed problem reports. That let's me optimize my experience and that's a good thing.

well, microsoft seems to be vey excited regarding to the release of windows. i hope vista7 will make a real change.

perhaps the greatest challenge for microsoft is to build an operating system with the high-tech features that is seemingly compatible to all computers even with the lowest resources (requirements)
