thanks for the clarification Scott, much appreciated (and what can I say, I've got a crossfire setup lol).

Call me crazy, but I think NVidia has the answers about SLI:
http://www.slizone.com/page/slizone_learn.html

From the FAQ there, "SLI technology requires the NVIDIA GPUs to match". Also they have lists of certified cards, power supplies, and motherboards that support SLI. They also have "Hybrid SLI" where a GPU integrated on the motherboard can be paired with a discrete graphics card:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/hybrid_sli.html

I know when they first came out (both sli and crossfire) that you needed identical cards. I know that ATI crossfire can be hybrid, I really don't follow the SLI much myself, but the system will take a performance hit, usually will not get the top speed of the fast card (not sure but it may get reduced to the speed of the slowest card).

i think that any cards that have sli you can put them together and should work. but not totally sure on it.

I'm pretty sure you need to have the same GPU's to get SLI to work, but it has been awhile since I've looked into that. A list of newer SLI boards can be found here http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010200280&page=1&srchInDesc=sli&bop=And&Pagesize=50 . You will want to check the performance of SLI to see the rates they will run. Anandtech.com has some good motherboard reviews so they should be able to give you an idea as to what to look for.

EDIT: Most onboard sound is pretty good nowadays, especially on the gamer boards, and give you HD 7.1 surround sound.
