JH, I wouldn't know about Vista 32-bit, as I'm running Vista 64-bit on my PC. I've tried everything imaginable and still can't get the 32-bit CAC 3 program to install from the CD due to its 16-bit InstallShield installation program. I'm hoping that upgrading to Windows 7 64-bit, I will be able to run 16-bit programs, unlike Vista 64-bit. I haven't a clue if Windows 7 will be backward compatible with 16-bit software, and have no idea who to ask.

bcope: There should be no trouble with 16 bit on 32 bit Vista, or hopefully 32 bit 7 for that matter. Kirputer, assuming you have read the rest of the thread, Have you tried a) running the setup program as administrator and possibly b) running it from a command prompt elevated as administrator? The procedure for the latter would be to run cmd.exe as administrator and typing [CD drive letter]:\setup.exe and pressing Enter. I have loaded 16 bit programs onto Vista and the solution seems to differ for each one. Procedure seems to be getting each executable to be run as administrator, possibly with compatability mode set to a 9x system and a variety of the other features selected. One program seemed to have problems installing until I clicked 'Run' instead of 'Install' at the splash screen, which brought up the installer. Another option, especially if the application was originally designed to work on DOS as well/instead of Windows, is to run the installer within a command prompt elevated as administrator. Often virtualization is slow, and it is often easier to buy an old computer for about £20.
The Vista Compatability 'Wizard' is basically useless, you can get the same functionality with the compatability tab for that program's properties.

Think we'll be able to install the CreataCard Gold 3 program from CD if we update to Windows 7? Or will we still not be able to due to the 16-bit InstallShield installation program used by the CD?

Hello,

This thread is about problems with 64 bit Vista and CreataCard 3.

I have the 32 bit version of Vista.
I am also having problems installing CreataCard Gold 3 on to it.

I have the CreataCard Gold 3 application CDROM. When I click on setup.exe, a box pops up saying installsheild. It will run for several minutes and then says "not responding".

I tried using Vista's compatability wizard, but that did not seem to make any difference.

Some of you have indicated that you have loaded CreataCard on to 32 bit systems. Can you let me know how you did that? thank you.

Back to the InstallShield Premier Repackager then. Hope my old computer boots up. It is pretty sad. I may do a System Recovery to restore the computer to its factory-shipped condition. That way I will have a fairly clean system on which to run the Repackager.

Programs that from a flash drive should be contained to one folder.
Sense Creatacard wouldn't run when the program folder and even other DLL files were copied over that means there is some other file or registry key that needs to be on the system drive. Whatever that is, it would need to be installed on each system for it to run from a flash drive thus defeating the purpose.

I'll give that a try (InstallShield Premier Repackager) when I get some time in the next few days.

Don't know if it is possible, but is there some way I could install Creatacard on a flash drive from my old computer running XP? That way, I could run it on any PC I'm using, including my Vista 64-bit computer by inserting the flash drive in a USB port.

Reading your post listing "repackage it" gave me an idea.
I only listed AppDeploy Repackager as it was a small free repackager.
There are other repackaging programs out there you can try.
Like InstallShield Premier includes a repackager though the program costs money.
It does appear from their site you can download a free 21 day trial of it.
You can get it from http://www.acresso.com/downloads/downloads_5850.htm?link_id=relatedLinks
You do need to register for the trial and the download is about 150MB.
If that is a problem, I can look for other repackager programs.

Thanks for your time and efforts jd2066. You went above and beyond. Not sure how I will proceed. I'm no computer whiz. Wish there was someplace I could just send/take the original installation disk to and have them repackage it into a working MSI for Vista 64-bit.

I looked at the API Monitor capture file and couldn't figure out the problem with it.
I'm now out of ideas for getting Creatacard to work on Windows Vista 64-bit.
One thing you might be able to do however is use Virtualzation software like VirtualBox (The 64-bit version is labled AMD64) to run Windows XP in a Virtual Machine running on Windows Vista 64-bit.
This is not the prefered way to run older programs as it takes more processer power and memory and doesn't integrate as well into the host OS (Windows Vista 64-bit in this case) but it's the only idea I have at the moment.

I looked at the DLL files you sent and I think I was wrong on them being the problem.
I looked at the PML again and I can't find a problem in the logs at the moment.
You can try making a log with API Monitor and I'll see if I can find the problem with it's log.
Though I'm not much of an expert on APIs so it may not help.
Also at the moment I don't have time to write how to use it so I'll have to do that tomarrow.

I moved the DLL files out of the C:\Program Files (x86)\CreataCard\Gold folder as suggested. When I launched the CreataCard executable, I got the following window for each DLL file in succession until it was replaced:

"CACard32.exe - Unable to Locate Component"

"This application has failed to start because xxx.dll (each of the DLLS removed) was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

When I put the DLLs back into the C:\Program Files (x86)\CreataCard\Gold folder and launched the CreataCard program, I got the original error "CreataCard." Within this window is "Error during program initialization. Please reinstall CreataCard."

Copy of these DLLs on the way to you via email.

I got the PML file and looked at what it showed.
My guess is that the following DLL files are failing:
C:\Program Files (x86)\CreataCard\Gold\jgpl400.dll
C:\Program Files (x86)\CreataCard\Gold\JGDW400.DLL
C:\Program Files (x86)\CreataCard\Gold\JGSD400.DLL
C:\Program Files (x86)\CreataCard\Gold\jgaw400.dll
C:\Program Files (x86)\CreataCard\Gold\jgsh400.dll
C:\Program Files (x86)\CreataCard\Gold\jgpl400.dll
C:\Program Files (x86)\CreataCard\Gold\jgmd400.dll

Try moving these DLL files to another folder and seeing if Creatacard will run without them.
If it won't run without them send me a copy of DLL files and I will check them out.

Try using Process Monitor to see what file and registry accesses the program is doing before that error message.
Here is how to use it.:
Run Process Monitor.
Click the capature icon (looks like a magnifine glass) on the left of the toolbar to turn off the capture so you can set a filter.
Click Fliter and click Filter.
Select process name, type in the name of the creatacard exe file, click the Add button.
Click Ok.
Click the Clear button to the left of the toolbar to clear the unfiltered events it has collected.
Click the capture button again to start a new capture.
Run creatacard, and when the error appears click ok.
In Process Explorer click capture to stop the capture.

Now you can either look though the list for an failures and try to fix it or save the list to a PML file, email it and I'll look at it and try to come up with something to fix the problem if I can.
How to save the list to a PML file:
Click File and Save.
Click the ... by the path and select where you want the file.
Click OK.
