@hellfire: have you tried using password protected sharing (PPS)? I have a private network on my home LAN, I use PPS and it works. When I first setup up folder sharing, I read up about it and followed the instructions from this MS TechNet article:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx

This article talks about "simple file sharing" where you turn off PPS and use a Guest account, but I haven't tried that. Either way, that article is the best description of Vista file (and printer) sharing that I have seen.

@hellfire: please remove the curse words from your post. It's against the forum rules and there are no age restrictions here.

I was disappointed, too, when I found that Home Premium could not act as a Remote Desktop server. They want you to buy Ultimate. There is no way that I know to install it separately.

As for the network file sharing, it's not a bug in Vista but the added security makes it more difficult. Some people bash Vista for a perceived lack of user-friendliness and others bash MS for poor security. Problem is that these 2 goals are in conflict. Anyway, I have a home network with Vista Home Premium, and I can share folders around so it does work. We just need to get your settings right.

You never answered this: can you share network folders between any of the other systems?

Guys, the OP said in his first post that he turned off firewalls and Windows Defender.

@hellfire: pipo asks a good question, do you have password-protected logons on any of these systems?

Can any of the other systems share network folder, for example, between PC 1 and PC 2? Are all systems set to the same Workgroup? Vista is picky about the Workgroup name, and it will go smoother if they all match.

As for Remote Desktop, you can't remote to a system with Vista Home Premium, but you can remote view or control from it.
