I just got my repy back from Symantec. They told me if I want a copy of the recovery disc I have to buy Ghost 14.0 again!!

Further to above post, I have finally managed to achieve a positive outcome! I hunted around on the Symantec site map until finally I found a free-call number for here in Australia. Phoned it and actually got to speak to a real human being who was very helpful. To cut a long story short, I had not been able to burn the image to disc because the file had not downloaded properly. Once I got the file downloaded properly it was very straightforward to burn the .ISO file to disc (I used CDBurnerXP as recommended by k9-worked beautifully and the Symantec guy was most impressed with it too!). So now I have a valid recovery disc for Ghost!

Thanks everybody for help on this- ScottW, whs, k9 and anyone else whose name temporarily escapes me. Thanks to your help I now have the recovery disc as well as a number of excellent resources such as tutes on backing-up, recovery disc etc for my future use. Bless you all.

With Ghost you use an external disk. Something like this http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Western-Digital-500GB-My-Book-Essential-Edition-2-0-External-Hard-Drive-WDH1U5000N/sem/rpsm/oid/193193/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

I have put 3 more little tutorials that I found in my files into PhotoBucket. Those you can snip if you find them useful. If that does not work well, let me know and I make PDF versions of it.

Don't give up. You MUST have the Ghost disk. Else you cannot recover. I would try the Norton procedure anyhow. I tried it loading from my disk. But in your case, they talk about downloading the ISO file from their site. That, I have not tried and that may very well work. If you are successful, let me know. Then I go that route too.
Btw. I never download paid programs. Always get the disk. That, I found, is the safer way. I only download the freebees.

Thanks whs but if you couldn't do it I doubt very much I could. If I had known the stress and hassle buying the product online was going to cause, I would have driven to the computer store and bought the darned thing! I have spent in good faith $118.97 U.S Dollars with Symantec (bought the Anti-Virus too) and I just hope they do the decent thing and send me a hard copy of the recovery disc (I emailed them a short time ago). Thanks everyone.

In case you had not seen this, here is the official Norton procedure for burning a Ghost ISO. Unfortunately I have not been able to make it work, but maybe you have more luck. http://service1.symantec.com/support/powerquest.nsf/docid/2008011023144262

K9, I went to use the CDBurnerXP software but when it asked me to select the ISO image I wanted to burn and I tried to choose the file (from desktop where I was advised by Norton to save it), I got a message saying it was "not a valid ISO image". What should I do now? Thanks for help!

It seems you have encountered a few hiccups when trying to use Nero. Try CDBurnerXP instead, its free, small (2.83 MiB) and simple (no complex mumbo jumbo involved). Here is the link - http://cdburnerxp.se/downloadsetup.exe

Use this to burn the ISO and then use Ghost to create an image.

RobbieBoy, this message is certainly relevant. If you have an administrator account, you should not get this message. Nero BurnRights is used to give non-administrators the ability to burn CDs and DVDs without needing an administrator.

Go to Control Panel -> User Accounts and you should see the account that you are logged in to. Underneath the user name it should say "Administrator" or "Standard User". If you have a standard user account, then use Nero BurnRights to get permission to burn CDs and DVDs. If you have an Administrator account, then you should already have burn rights, and there may be something else going on.

ScottW, I could not see the little arrow that you referred to. I don't know if this is relevant, but when I try to open Nero Express from my desktop, I get a message that says:

"Please ask your system administrator to give you permission to write CD/DVD's. This can be done using the control panel application Nero BurnRights. The tool is already installed on this PC"

(I did not think the above message was relevant earlier because when you click the little 'ok' button underneath this message, it seems to take you to the next step ok). But could this be causing my difficulties when I try to double-click the file icon? Thanks.

techgranny, you are absolutely right. Many people seem to forget the simple principles of backing up and get involved into complex scenarios that will fail at the end. They also only think about backing up the data and not the OS. I think there are 3 essential points to be observed:
1. The backup should be for the data (system and user), operating system and all the programs on the OS disk.
2. The backups should be to an external device (disk, USB stick, SSD). Ideally you disconnect this device after backup so that the "bad guys" cannot get at it. When your OS disk crashes (e.g. head crash), restore points or data saved on the internal disk will be no good for anything. A second internal disk is an option and is , of course, the fastest. But that does not have the isolation of a disconnected external device.
3. You must be able to start the recovery program from a CD/DVD. Once the operating system does not function any more, you need to boot something to get going - unless you want to reinstall the OS with all the headaches that this produces.
Programs like Ghost and others do that. I think the small investment for those is well worth it. But, if anybody has a simpler and better scenario, I am willing to listen.
