@ Sjac - If you want to uninstall an antivirus program you've got to stop it from running before uninstalling or part of it will only be uninstalled after a restart. Goes for virtually every antivirus program.
Secondly you can disable the LinkScanner feature easily, if you don't want to use it.

@ klapin - I've been using AVG for years and it works fine for me, trustworthy and easy to configure - and it is free.

And Avira doesn't support an emailscanner for Outlook Express / Windows Mail (last time I checked at least), but AVG does. That's a big plus as far as I'm concerned.

Greetzz,
Sarah.

If you happen to know some German, you could go to this German Computer Mag website http://www.computerbild.de/artikel/cb-Heft-Service-zum-Heft-Kaspersky-Security-Suite-V_1988141.html from where you can get Kaspersky for free - but it is all in German (including this edition of Kaspersky). It also tells you how to get the product key from there. They are good for 3 months and you can renew for up to a year.

I wouldn't go for AVG. I also had it for years, and it served me well, however it is now a very bad man (TM). First of all it takes several attempts to uninstall (like many antivirus programs actually). Secondly is the recent LinkScanner scandal which can reportedly make you use an extra 2GB of your bandwidth, and finally, it seems to have gotten a lot slower at everything recently. I am now using Kaspersky, a paid-for suite. But if you want a free one, go with something other than AVG..
