@madmacs: You would do that by just installing the indiviual codecs you need to play the file. There are programs that tell you what codec a file needs.
For common ones like DivX and Xvid you can install ffdshow to play them. This is better then a codec pack that usually includes things like ffdshow, DivX.com codecs, Xvid.com binary, and many other codecs all at once that can conflict.

@ScottW, hi, could you please tell how I get WMP 11 to play .avi files properly without installing any codec packages? I have VLC and can watch everything but when I try opening an .avi file in WMP 11 all I get is a black screen with sound. I´d love to get know how to make the media player work properly. I understand that every .avi file can have different sound and video setups, is this true? Thx in advance, Matt

xenomex, I do some video work, too, but nothing heavy. I used to think codec packs were good -- I know about the Vista pack, I had K-Lite installed at one time, and I looked into CCCP.

The problem with these codec packs is that they are a one-size-fits all solution. That means you can never guarantee compatibility with any individual system, which may have quirks. I learned the downside of codec packs when I started hanging out on some video forums, such as xbox-scene, with some real hardcore videophiles. It's better for you and me who work on video to control each codec and DS filter that goes on our systems. My advice is uninstall that codec pack, then put back only the ones you need and manage them yourself. If you get stuck, I'll help.

@ScottW,
First of all, Thanks man!
and about the codec that i use...i remember downloading a codec along time ago called "Vista Codec Package" and i checked my "Programs & Features" and successfully found it!
I want to Uninstall it...but iam just a little too afraid to take the risk...but i am willing to do so if i get a reply from you!
I am a really heavy video maker, in my external hardrive i have 70 Gigabytes worth of videos that i have made.
Thats with out the Raw vid files "The unedited version of my vids" 100 Gigabytes+
And when i got my new cell phone i wanted to put some...but since .3gp was the oly format the my phone could work on, i had to use .3gp

Anyway, Bottom line, shall i go ahead and uninstall Vista Codec Pack,
Personally i was never so keen on codec packages, but i think i have forgotten that i even had that!
Hope i get a reply soon, and again, thanks for your help!

xenomex: Good attitude! Let's get to the bottom of this.

Here's my thinking. A 3gp file is a kind of MPEG-4 video stream. If explorer would crash trying to render thumbnails, it was probably using a video codec, a DirectShow Filter, or a DMO to try and render the file. I suspect there may be a codec or filter problem. Since you are into video, according to your profile, you need to learn about this anyway if you don't already know it.

First, tell me what codecs you think you have, especially which one might try to render MPEG-4 files. Do you have any codec packs, such as K-Lite or CCCP? BTW, I personally do NOT recommend codec packs.

Next we will load up your video toolbox with some nifty utilities, though you might already have some. First, try the K-Lite CodecTweakTool which will check for broken codecs and DS filters and fix them. (The tweak tool is available without codec pack!) If that doesn't do it, next would be running a DirectShow filter graph to see what Windows is trying to use to render those 3gp files. That should do for starters. Get your tools at http://www.videohelp.com/tools

Post back with your results and any questions.

xenomex: great news! I love it when a solution comes together.

I wonder if you would be interested in trying to diagnose the underlying problem. Although you can now open folders with .3gp files and play back in RealPlayer, there is still something on your system that chokes on .3gp files. If you want to continue this, I have some ideas about what might be happening.

But if you're sick of all this tweaking and would rather get on with updating your cell phone, I can let it go. If you stop now, but want to address it later, come on back and post again whenever you are ready.

Thanks for replying!, i think you have understood me well :)
and i did try the "file association" and it was originally set to >RealPlayer< but i changed it to WMP thinking there was a difference..but unfortunatly there isn't.

And about the Thumbnail preview...i have a feeling im getting closer and closer to a soloution, i made the Thumbnail Preview as small as possible, and i didnt get the message....Until....i clicked on it to play it!
it loaded WMP but after a few seconds the WMP window turned white and the message came!

Ok, i am not going to give up, i think im nearly there!

xenomex, you're not completely misunderstood. At least not in this thread. :)

You don't need help with .3gp playback or converting formats. You get the explorer stopped working message if you try to open a .3gp file. If I understand correctly, even opening a folder with .3gp files in it causes the same error, right?

One possible reason for the folder viewing crash is that Windows may be trying to generate thumbnails. That causes it to access the .3gp files -- even though you haven't clicked on them -- in order to try making a thumbnail. If you use the details view in File Explorer, that may help. You could also disable thumbnail previews at least until the problem is resolved.

We have asked you about what file association you have for .3gp and I don't see that you have listed it. Please do that and post back. If you're not sure how, please ask.

xenomex, if you have too many problems trying to fix your associations you could always try converting the file type to something you are not having any problems with (mpg, avi, etc) and then change it back when you are ready to put them back on your phone. A bit cumbersome of a process, but it can be helpful in the future if you ever need to convert to other formats in the future. I put a link in the Best of Breed Reference Sites forum (sticky at the top of the main forum page) and look for my post near the bottom of the first page. The link will take you to the download page for a program called Super (c). It's one of the best conversion utilities I've come across yet.
