@FMZ,I use to work for a Dell reseller (as a tech) so I saw my fair share of Dell service techs that came out to replace parts under warranty. I would usually get this or that from them. One of the things I snagged was a CD that came with each new MOBO and it was labeled 'for service technicians only'. You can use it to change the service tag if needed. Also if you still have the box that the MOBO came in it should have this CD. if not you could always call dell(again) and ask for that CD to be sent.

JD,

I just finished removing and re-connecting the coin battery, indeed only the time & date was erased, no luck with the Service Tag! I'll look into the jumper option.

Just removing the motherboard and reinstalling it would not change anything.
If the tag setting is stored in the CMOS area then there is usually a jumper you can set to clear it. Or if you don't know where the jumper is just taking the small battery out of the motherboard and putting it back should clear it too. Though other settings like the Date and Time would be lost too.
There maybe a manual that lists if a jumper is available.
I have no idea if the tag is stored there or if there is a setting in the BIOS Setup to change the tag.
You would have to find out. I haven't ever had to get a new motherboard for a Dell and the existing ones never gave me an option to change the tag.

Edit: I just looked for more info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonvolatile_BIOS_memory
Apparently in some modern computers just taking the battery out doesn't clear the whole CMOS, just the date and time. So the jumper would have to be used in that case.

Good to know, I thought it was indeed strange advice from the tech. On another note, if i would remove the MB and re-install would it give me an option to re-insert the Service Tag again?

Windows has nothing to do with storing BIOS settings so reinstalling it will not help.
I didn't think there was a way to change the service tag at all. If you can't change it now maybe it is a one time change for the new motherboard.
There are no ill effects if the service tag is wrong.
The service tag field is solely for reference purposes.
You can either look it up in the BIOS or the support.dell.com application can look it up from there.
If you know the correct tag and can enter it in support.dell.com or tell a Dell support tech what it is then the BIOS copy makes no difference.

Dell installed a new motherboard in my laptop, when I went in BIOS I noticed that the service tag was not filled out.
I filled it out and saved but made a mistake and punched in a wrong digit.

Is there anyway how I can change this?
I spoke with a Dell tech. he told me to re-install Windows,I do not know if that is the solution.
Are there any effects if the Service tag is wrong in the BIOS?

Thanks
