@mpc. It's a situation I have had twice. I can connect to the Internet (but not automatically). And anything connected with NIC doesn't work.
It's not fatal. Just an inconvenience (like having to input your WEP key after every re-boot)

Ah, I had those same 2 problems on my Dell laptop (NO Dell s/w installed) last year.
The only way I could find to fix it was to re-install Vista

Ok. I haven't ever used the WiFi catcher or a wireless gadget before. So I can't really say what the problem would be.
The Windows wireless configuration usually is enough for me.

JD, there are several things that are not working:

1) when I use the wifi catcher on my laptop it starts but does not show the wireless networks available (while there are indeed networks available)
2) I had a wireless gadget that was working without issues on my side bar, at this time it is not functional anymore (it stays blank)

I strongly feel that it is because the of the above mentioned situation?

If the wireless connection is working why do you need to use the wireless configuration utility from Dell?

You could try uninstalling 'Dell Wireless WLAN Card' and then reinstall from the cd, see if that make a difference

In the device manager all looks fine, I have a Intel/pro wireless card installed all in working order, latest drivers and this is also for the Dell Wireless Utility, latest drivers installed but as mentioned above when starting up the utility it gives me the error message: :"The wireless network adapter could not be accessed. This application may have diminished functionality as result."
