raphoenix, I was able to re-install WinXP, but all my problems still seem to be there one way or another. Can't boot with any burnt disks (boot-n-nuke,etc.) and I am still having the burning problems. Installed an actual CD-ROM, and I still had the CD boot problem, but that could of been bad also. Any sugestions? Sorry for missing your post earlier. Thanks Rick...Garry

Thanks JH. I thought of that, which would of meant to purchase a new one, as the old one isn't working. I did find the problem. I made a copy of my scratched up installation CD and though it worked before, I had to install with the scratched up original one. Took a couple times but have it fixed. I'll try to boot from another CD I have with a different program to see if the problem is completely fixed. As of now, I'm not sure if it is. Garry

If it is possible to access the CD drive, it just isn't booting, you could try booting from a floppy disk then accessing the CD drive from there?

Garry,
---
Did you get the CD/DVD working ??
---
Without that, you can't do any type of install from an XP Disc.
---
Also you will need all the Machine Device Drivers on Disc or USB Stick to load in after an XP Clean Install.
---
Regards,

Update: I hate to double post, but wanted this back up in the current times. Used System Restore and now I'm back to booting to the Hardware Profile window instead of to the install CD. This never happened. The disk is bought and has previously many times before rebooted to cd to install WinXP Pro. Really, would installing XP on top of this one get me to the place where I can possibly later install a fresh copy of XP or would it not or make things worse? Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks Garry

Have the master/slave jumpers set and had changed out the ribbon to a newer one. Do think I'll watch a movie first with some Orville. After the quad and the sellers, if anything were to go wrong here, well just too much. Will check back one more time before the nuke job. Thanks for all, Rick

I remember the last time I did that (LOL). Guess it would be worth a try. Would I have to have anything saved to disk for the reading of the ROM?Maybe I'll try a little more to get the read out to these drives. Is a possibility that both could be bad. Small, but possible. I do have use od at least 1 of the drives, but won't boot with cd install in it....Garry

Garry,
---
Personally, I would never do a Repair Install.
---
A Clean Install with a Format, in my opinion, is always best.
---
If you can get the CD working, why don't you just Dban (Nuke) the Hard Drive and then do a Clean Install.
---

Man! This wouldn't know how to act with a duel (LOL) This dino is single. Main thing I'd like to do is get it to boot from cd. Goes straight thru, now, without asking me to press any key for cd boot. Seems to be really degrading. Would it create too many problems to install over this install? Could then format, etc. then re-install. Only thing I found was IDE Channel and Access Mode in BIOS. Both are set to Auto. Thanks Garry

Actually, it's a quad. They sent it back (forced changed mobo ASUS PN5-D) like it came straight from a crack house. Wires everywhere, connectors stuck in fans, paint all chipped off, then it kept freezing up on me. So back it went! ...I went into the Phoenix BIOS and could find nothing pertaining to cd/dvd, or in My Computer.

Garry,
---
If the Bios has many screens like the one you sent back, look under the Drives Screen and highlight the CD to see if it gives you any options.
---
The Foxconn Bios may not have a lot of options. :(
---
What's wrong with a Pent Dual Core clocking at 3.00 and over ?? (LOL) :) :)
They just run a bit Hot is all. (LOL)

Hi, I'm having this huge problem with my cd/dvd drives. I have been having problems with DVD-RAM drive, and installed an old cd-rom drive to repair or re-install XP. Now when I reboot it will not go into the cd, though I have the option to press any key at post. Instead. XP boots into Hardware Profile/Configuration Properties with one profile to choose from. Should I just install over top of existing install? This really has me going around in circles. Have cd-rom set as no.1 in BIOS. Please help! Garry
