Greg, you're welcome. I'm glad that it's working for you, but sorry to hear that you had dealings with a shop that sells pirated software! What is the name of the place? Have you reported them to the legal authorities? I would at least like to know what country they are in.

You can report Windows piracy to Microsoft here:
http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/

@Scott, that seem to do the trick, i can now run my vista for 30days, the reason i say 30 days is come to find out the reason i had the GRUB bootloader is because the vista i have installed is a pirated copy, not by choice, the shop i bought it from installs pirated copys of OS, so now i am stuck, it was running fine for the past 9months intill i flashed the bios, now i have to buy a key and spend another $300. Thanks for all your help, you have been GREAT!

For whatever reason, the Linux bootloader (GRUB) is written to your Master Boot Record (MBR). Get yourself a copy of EasyBCD and you can fix this for good. In EasyBCD, go to the "Manage Bootloader" tab, select "Reinstall the Vista Bootloader", then click the "Write MBR" button. These instructions are also shown on this page in the EasyBCD documentation.

Greg, hello. From Vista or 7, run bcdedit.exe in an elevated command prompt and copy the output here. This will tell us where the BCD store thinks that the Vista bootloader should be. In XP, Vista, or 7, you can also run EasyBCD to get the boot information. Also, EasyBCD may be the way to repair the boot data once we know what is wrong.

It will say bootlgdr successful, turning to gate 20 successful, intl (80) some what like that, and for the bios i can go to bios and i looked at all the settings, i tried the boot sequence in many different ways. i installed xp and it worked fine, but from my under standing xp and vista uses 2 different boot loaders, i can install windows 7 fine and it works great, but for windows vista, i just cant seem to fix the boot loader permanently.

You said you updated the BIOS, right?

Have you looked at the BIOS settings after it was updated? Many times it gets set to DEFAULT, which might have disabled prior settings that were needed to boot. Specific one to look at is the BOOT ORDER or BOOT DEVICES.

If you are booting from a SATA drive, depending on computer, the default could be IDE drive, which would be the CD/DVD drive more than likely, and explain why the CD boots. Many BIOS in the initial state do not enable SATA as bootable nor RAID array's.

Booting after an install or fixing the boot record works fine usually as the BIOS isn't loading that info, but once you power off the BIOS reloads its loading info. The usual message you'd get is bootloader missing or unable to find bootable device.

here are my specs, dp45sg mobo, q9300 quad processor, 4gb ddr3 corsair, 1tb wd hdd, and his ice q 4850, and vista ultimate 64bit, anyway, i updated the bios for blue screen purposes and i used the .exe and it went successful, but after that windows wont boot, so i put in gw scan and wrote 0's through the whole hard drive. re installed vista, everything seems to go fine, i get to the desktop for the first time near the end of the install, then it says windows is shutting down, ok no biggie. well after it boots up i get a black screen with some gibberish on it and the only way i can get it to boot is by putting the recovery cd and going to cmd and typing bootrec/fixboot and bootrec/fixmbr. then it works fine, i can get onto desk top, but when i have to restart i have to do it all over again.
