Rather than using the drivers from the original CD, try getting the very latest drivers from Dell's website.

got the drivers to load for the cd rom and started to format, thought i had it made.
when set up restarted the pc, i lost the drivers again. then set up stopped working.
loaded original windows and went to device manager and reloaded the drivers and pc did
the same thing. lost the drivers on restart.

yes, a dell dimension 3000.
i changed the power supply, and put in new ram.
the system will boot to the desk top now. still getting the blue error screen.
it wants me to run a CHKDSK/F...i can't get it to work.
when the system boots it tells me primary drive 1 not found..hit F1 to continue.
it takes a while but it will boot to the desk top.
i can open device manager but i am having no luck installing the drivers.
got the usb port drivers to load from windows and the yellow mark went away
but they wont read my usb stick. can not get IE to open.
i got the boot order as cd-rom first then HD.
i am about ready to give up!

elne139, hello. Let's not junk that computer just yet. You said it's a Dell 3000, but that's not the full model name. Is it perhaps a Dell Dimension 3000?

All of the best diagnostic and recovery tools need to boot from the CD/DVD drive, so the first thing that we need to do is get that working. To just boot from a CD or DVD does not require any drivers. The BIOS can read the data from the disc and start the boot process going. So first you need to check in the BIOS and make sure that the CD/DVD drive is being recognized and that it is the first device in the boot sequence. You will find instructions from Dell here on how to access the BIOS of a Dimension 3000. If that's not your system, the procedure should still be similar. The F2 key is the usual way to enter the BIOS or "Setup" on a Dell.

ok, my system will start to boot, get the blue screen of death
(it flashes by so fast i can not read it)
then the system reboots, get the blue screen then reboots and on
and on until i shut it off.
i tried installing cd drivers with my usb drive. did not work!
i can't roll back the drivers because i can not get to control
panel to open the system folder.
tried to boot to safe mode with comand prompt, but system just keeps rebooting.
is there anything i can do to format? or is it just junk now.
i think i need a miracle!!
thanks in advance

you may have lost the drivers for the cd drives but maybe not for usb memory - most sticks have built in drivers.

you could use that cd-rom in your computer downstairs and "explore" it to find the right drivers and copy those files onto the usb then place the usb in your xp computer to install the drivers

ive never explored the cd i got for xp but id suggest copy everything that sounds right into the usb stick then when you try to update the cd-rom drivers search the usb for them - i have never done that so i dont know if it will work :(

alternatively,

if you had updated the drivers you could roll-back to an older driver but that may not be possible : /

does your other computer play the cd? if so and you have no personal files on your "infected" computer you could format it and do a clean install. ive done that after filling up the registry/disk space to the point of no repair :P cant even de-frag its so messed up...HA

good luck

also, www.pctools.com offer free firewall and anti-virus and behavioural protection programs that i use

elne139, Hi. I'm sorry that you are having so much trouble. Did you try to have XP install its own drivers using the sfc /scannow command? Might give that a try. Post back to let us know how you made out. Good luck...Garry

how can i format or reload drivers when the cd rom is not found. (will not play a cd)

what do you mean drivers for the cd-rom? did the virus enter the cd-rom and wipe out *only* drivers? the installation cd that carries xp?

if you know what its called (the virus i mean) go to www.threatexpert.com and search their online database of threats to learn more about your virus
