@Aleeve, like LH and many others I've used Vista since the early days (I paid extra £££ for it since XP was still top dog at that time) and I agree it has improved dramatically over the buggy, incompatible mess it was pre SP1. I also use XP, Ubuntu 9.04 and OSX 10.5.4 and could recommend any of them to OldAussieJohn!

@OldAussieJohn, whatever decision you make will be the right one, as long as your happy. There is no need to rush into uninstalling Vista, give it a chance and if you don't like it you can always switch to XP. Just MAKE SURE to create a Vista start up disk first though.

ProstheticHead: Payroll or no payroll, in my opinion (and clearly many others here) Vista has now well and truly settled in and 'sprung roots' so to speak - it is definitely more secure (and arguably intuitive), and any computer designed for Vista will be bound to work better with that than XP.

OldAussieJohn: I know that this is perhaps not what you were asking for, but seriously, give Vista a try - you may surprise yourself

Much higher performance in many cases, much more secure. I hated the Vista my PC came with, just get used to it and try putting programs in compatability mode quite often. Have you tried pressing windows logo+D in XP and Vista? It is just so much faster in Vista with Aero enabled.

Hi everyone thanks for taking the time to give me info.
I feel that I am not experienced enough, so I will have to take my new laptop to someone like you guys to get it done next time I am in civilisation (town).
I hope I am not imageining that my new pc with Vista is not working as good as XP.
This is my 4th Toshiba Satellite laptop with XP in and I have never really had any trouble, except when I used to buy Antivirus, either Norton or MCAfee. I used to get lots of bugs & viruses with bought $$$ antiviruses, until someone on the net put me onto Avast (its free) . Since I have been using Avast for the last 7 years, I have never got a bug or virus, and it automatically updates itself.
I also use (they are also free) ad-aware and CCleaner.
When I look on the net, around 50% say Vista is good, and 50% say its "sh#t" ?
I am really starting to become confused !
anyway members, thanks for you expert advice.
all the best
old "aussie" John

LOL it sounds like some of you fellows are on the payroll at Microsoft. If it's XP they want, XP they shall have IMO.

@OldAussieJohn, Whatever you decide to do, do not install any of those "Driver Doctor" style programs. They are nothing but trouble! Get your drivers direct from Toshiba. This is the download page for Toshiba Europe.

Vista is a great operating system, if your computer can take it.

I brought a laptop about 4 months after Vista came out, only 512MB RAM, 2Ghz single core, it ran so slowly even on Vista Basic. So I downgraded to XP. You don't really need to worry about the drivers before hand. Normally, because most of it is generic plug and play hardware, you'll be able to run without drivers. However screen size will be wrong until you get the correct display drivers, wireless won't work until you get the correct wireless drivers (Make sure you know what type of wireless it is before getting drivers Intel or Atheros), the rest of the computer should work.

I've now upgraded my laptop to 2GB RAM, and its running Windows 7 (An even better OS).

Sources for my post: Toshiba Satellite user myself, and know many others with them, great laptops.

john, get to know how to use vista. i agree with whs, also, vista is an excellent operating system. so far in three years the only thing i've found wrong with vista are people using xp. don't listen to a bunch of confusing comments. keep it maintained and watch out for too many start up programs. also an antivirus that not heavy works great. stick with vista, xp is an old, slow, outdated operating system.

@the mods on OEM. isn't an OEM of an operating system only for a single computer use? if it's already installed on one computer will it reinstall on a second with a completely different build?

Hi OldAussieJohn,

Nice 1 - What a shock to find Vista on it. Instead of good old XP! - So you have bought a new Toshiba Satellite laptop? However, you don't state what Series Model Number it is!

Wright to the Point! - As the 2 others are saying, you would need to be careful about this: As the most important; 1. You need to know that the Motherboard BOIS on your Toshiba Laptop will support XP?

In most cases, you will find that Toshiba sattelites Laptops will allow you to switch from Vista to

XP, Thru' the BOIS set-up!

Here is a link: http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp? service=UK& mode=

allMachines&action=search& teddProduct=776&selShortMod=760 ...To Toshiba sattelites Laptops Driver Downloads!

Just enter your Series Model Number in. And you will find if there are any XP support Drivers for you Model.

And if you find from their, that it does as XP drivers for it? - Then you will know that you can install XP on it!

So check this out first, from Toshiba sattelites Laptops Web-Site! - Before you try to go aheard with this Operation!

I myself, is not a fan of Vista. - And also I think XP is much faster than Vista in Start-up! ...and

there are plenty jokes going around about Vista, as to say how Crap it is.

But on the other hand, just think about this before you go aheard with this; As I can give you tips on

how to install XP on it!

I will wait for your reply.

regards,

the PC, you have to burn it yourself (2 DVD-R's) from the recovery partition.
3. I personally think it is a big mistake to swap Vista for XP. Vista is a much better Operating System and in most cases it is faster than XP. It does, however, need 2GBs of RAM as a minimum.

^ i totally agree this one and do a format install a fresh copy

1. You have to be extremely careful. The very first order of the day is to find ALL XP drivers for your new system. That is not obvious. If you do not find them, your XP will never run.
2. Make sure you have a Vista installation disk in case you have to go back to Vista. If it was not delivered with the PC, you have to burn it yourself (2 DVD-R's) from the recovery partition.
3. I personally think it is a big mistake to swap Vista for XP. Vista is a much better Operating System and in most cases it is faster than XP. It does, however, need 2GBs of RAM as a minimum.

The answer to your question is fomatting. During XP installation, you have to format the HDD which deletes all data on the drive and then you can install XP. But the problem you will face is the fact that chances are you bought a OEM version of XP, which is a generic windows installation (meaning it is not made for any specific computer) intended for a computer which has nothing on the HDD. You will also need to find drivers for your specific laptop. When you do find drivers, you can either slipstream the installation or just install the drivers once XP is installed.

There is more to doing this kind of thing, i just can't think of it at this moment. Sorry.

Hi everyone, I am a new member.

I was enjoying a glass of wine the other evening, and I spilled a full glass of wine onto the keyboard of my Toshiba Satellite which had Windows XP ... I killed it DEAD (the PC that is)

Anyway, I went to town (I live in the bush) and bought a new Toshiba Satellite laptop.

When I got home I found it had Vista in it

No matter how much I tried, I cannot get it to perform like any of the other Toshiba sattelites that I have had over the years with XP in them. (this is my own personal observation).

"happy days" I found XP software on Ebay for only au$60 so I bought it.

I am not really computer "savvy" but I struggle through.

I cannot get the computer to download the new XP program, it keeps telling me that I cannot download something old onto something new

Can someone please tell me how to delete Vista from my computer so I can download XP

thanks everyone
