Hi Irv,
I will go through your suggested procedure. I appreciate the input. Thanks so much for the info. I hope this works. The crashes and lock-ups are really frustrating.

Well, first thing I'd do is take out the extra memory and see if it still happens? If it does, the new memory is the problem.

If the new memory isn't the same speed (not clear if you added 512MB or replaced the old memory with a 1GB stick?) as the old memory, you could have a problem. Generally however, mixing of RAM speeds is not a problem, as long as the RAM is at least as fast as required by the system.

Get CPU-Z and run it (if you can) to check the memory. Can't even run that, then assuming you have 2 512MB sticks, put each one in only, boot the machine, run CPU-Z, and record the data.

Also check your computer's service manual and see if you've put the RAM sticks in the proper slot, if they are not you could have problems.

Best bet, get a single 1GB stick, or even go up to 2GB's.

Irv S.

I recently upgraded my old Dell Inspiron from 512MB to 1GB of memory. The computer immediately recognized the memory increase although I didn't notice any speed increase. Since then, I have constant computer crashes, computer lock ups. This happens when I am launching a new application, in the middle of working on an application, on the internet and all at unexpected times. It doesn't seem to matter what application I am running. I just read that this memory installation may be the cause. What can I do to stop/fix the problems?
