From reading it again, it seems I may have mixed up the study and what ScottW said but still it's the same point. Pointless statistics saying Firefox users are somehow better then Internet Explorer users.

Wait... statistics can be warped?!? Noooo! Next you will be telling me that Apple users have a higher household income because they need it to afford that proprietary hardware. Shirley, you jest!

Then, again, I thought rhetorical questions didn't get answered so what do I know?

Well, it seems this topic has a lot of speculating about things but here are the actual facts:
1. In Windows Vista with UAC Internet Explorer 7 and more so 8 are more secure then other browsers like Firefox and Opera just because of Protected Mode as all the web pages run at the lowest integrity level.
Any security hole in Internet Explorer 7/8 in the page code can not write anything and or do bad things while in Protected Mode. You would have to run an unsafe control outside of Protected Mode for that to happen and Internet Explorer will not do that unless you tell it too.

2. Activex in Internet Explorer is no more unsafe the Netscape NPAPI Plugin system that other browsers like Firefox and Opera use.
Both systems allow code to be installed and run on your computer.
This code can do anything from writing files to displaying popup ads.
It just so happens that Internet Explorer was the one that got the majority of malware written for it. It's hard to say for sure why but the fact that most people use Internet Explorer is probably a big factor.

3. For Internet Explorer's invasiveness it depends on how you look at things.
Internet Explorer consists of two parts the backend engine that renders web pages and the front end you use when you run iexplore.exe
The backend engine is included with Windows and is used by many things built-in like Windows Explorer to third-party programs like Quicken and IETab.
The frontend is just a normal browser like Firefox that uses the backend and can be removed without issue and in fact in Windows 7 you will be able to remove it.
It just so happens that things like Portable Firefox include the backend (Gecko Rendering engine) and the frontend (Firefox) in one package that can be moved from one system to another.
There really is no need for a Portable Internet Explorer when it's installed on the computer.

4. The invasiveness of Mozilla Firefox is not that much.
ScottW is correct. All you need to do is either uncheck 'Set As Default Browser' in the installer or after the install go to the "Default Programs" in Control Panel and set Internet Explorer or another browser as the default and you will never see any part of Firefox launching for anything without you doing it.
As for Google Chrome, that would qualify as invasive because a process (GoogleUpdater.exe) is installed and always runs in the background without any permission from you.
For Safari you can stop it's updater (Apple Software Update) in the installer or after the install by uninstalling it though it's a little hidden and hard to figure out.

5. As for the study that said Firefox users were smarter.
That is just warping of statistics, overall there are more Internet Explorer users and Firefox users so while it would seem like more smart people use Firefox the truth is plenty of Internet Explorer users are smart and in fact by volume of users, there are likely more smart people using Internet Explorer.

6. What browser should you use?
Whatever works best for you.
I happen to be using three at the moment.
Internet Explorer with IE7Pro, Firefox with many extensions and the Google Chromium Trunk Build (I use it because It doesn't include the Google installer or updater).

I really don't know what happened with FF. It just disgusted me. Maybe it was my fault and I checked the wrong box. But I probably did not check the "default browser" box. I never do with other browsers. I always watch the little checkboxes, but sometimes I miss one. I use Secunia too. That is a useful program.

whs, I know what you mean. I also dislike those programs that install other things without asking me and run services or startups without asking. Apple may be the worst, not only with the foistware, but where I have iTunes installed the iPodService is always running even though I have no iPod! I won't install iTunes on my primary system.

I don't understand the problem with Firefox, though. I have installed it many times and it does not foist anything on me or start any services or startups. It only runs when called -- firefox.exe is in Task Manager's list of processes only when FF is running. Are you saying that it takes over file type associations, such as .htm etc., without asking? I know it does not become the default browser without asking.

I'm with you, though, for other programs. Probably the most common foistware is Google Toolbar. I always run the custom install, and I do watch for little checkboxes to undo. I never let any auto-updaters run, instead I use Secunia PSI to periodically check for updates on *my* schedule. Eternal vigilance is the price of (computing) freedom.

ScottW, I have a slightly different definition of "invasive". A program that sits quietly on the disk and does not do anything as long as I don't call it, is ok - even if it came packaged with the OS. The ones I hate are those that drag all kinds of stuff behind (as default) when being installed. Safari and Bonjour is an example (other Apple programs have the same habit) or a lot of others that install Google or Yahoo toolbars as default. And if one does not watch out like a police dog unchecking little boxes during installation, all this stuff ends up on the system. Worse even like FF, that takes over the whole setup if you don't watch it. If I install program X, I expect the vanilla version of program X and not a lot of other junk. If I want additional stuff, they can always put it into their "Tools" or "options" section.
Other "invasions" I do not like are programs that constantly update their stuff and many times require a reboot after the update. Adobe and AOL are good examples for that.

I also don't want to start or continue a browser war, but I have to agree with Bob that IE is *the* most invasive that a browser can be. Firefox is available in a portable version -- that means NO installer, no hooks into the OS, and so on. You could run it from a USB flash drive and leave no "droppings" on your system. IE can't do this -- it can't even be separated from the OS! At least if Firefox causes trouble, you can uninstall it. Where's the uninstaller for IE? Where's the portable version? These are rhetorical questions.

It nice that other browsers come in portable versions, too. It's the only way I would test a new browser because there is no way I want to experiment on my primary system with an unknown app. Sure, I could make a Ghost image and restore later, but I might lose other changes made during that time. I always prefer the portable version of an app whenever one is available.

Well, at the time I had 6 browsers. When I installed FF3, it took over everything in sight. All the nifty shortcuts I had in my AppLauncher using all different browsers (for a reason) now all of a sudden were all FF. And when I unistalled FF, they all became Opera (beats me why) - but originally they were IE7, Safari, the World Browser, K-Meleon, - and some were Opera too. So the damn FF damaged my system setup even after being sent to hell. And resetting everything in the AppLauncher is a lot of work. So from now on, FF is on the blacklist.

This isn't a flame war, more like some friendly jousting (so far anyway). And yes, I agree with you . . . the choice of browser is much like the choice of AV. It's just a matter of 1) What you're comfortable with, and 2) What "plays well" with the other stuff on your system.

BTW, how can a browser be more "invasive" then IE, which is embedded in the system?

Isn't it simple - you use what you like best. No need for a war. I have been using a whole array of browsers (I think 8 or 9 in total), But I always defaulted back to IE as my main browser, although i use a few others for various reasons and applications. The only one I won't tolerate any more is FF - that thing is too invasive. Srewed up everything last time. I guees I'll have to settle for the "low income" group - LOL.
