The value <code>AppData</code> is suppose to be set to <code>%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming</code> for Windows Vista (English) and to <code>%USERPROFILE%\Application Data</code> for Windows XP (English). Mozilla Firefox and Adobe Reader are some of the many programs that use that value to find the path to store their per-user configuration files. The current value of <code>%APPDATA%</code> is invalid as <code>%APPDATA%</code> is an Environment Variable that stores the value from that registry value. Here is how to fix this problem: 1. Copy the correct path to the clipboard. In this case for Windows Vista (English) it's: <code>%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming</code> 2. Open that key in the registry editor. 3. Double click on the value <code>AppData</code>. 4. Select the current data and erase it. 5. Paste the correct path that is on the clipboard. 6. Click Ok and close the registry editor. 7. It started with my using a registry cleaner and cleaning files manually...bad idea :-\ The problem began with Mozilla Firefox not opening as stated by member SR84. Then I began receiving the error the %APPDATA% error while trying to open a document on IExplorer that needed to open in Adobe Acrobat. It offered an updated version (which was Adobe 9.0) but that was the version I had already. I tried to uninstall the version I had already, and replace it by reinstalling from Adobe.com again. That wasn't gonna happen. That's when I began getting the error code 1606 message as did SR84 and the program features would not allow me to uninstall the Adobe 9.0 application. As far as the restore solution, well that's not an option since I did a disk clean not to long ago and deleted backup files from September backwards--to save memory and disk space. I saved the Dec 2008 backups forward; but I only noticed backups for December and not Jan through Feb 2009...strange I thought. Anyhow; I also neglected to consider that I had did a lot of file maintenance due to viruses and adware from online learning sources like eCollege, and MyScribe/Cafescribe and Adobe Digital Additions. It was mandatory to use these application for school and to access elearning Elluminate "live lectures". I often got viruses that had been transferred into threaded discussions by students and unwitting professors as well. Often, locating the source of the infraction to my system was less pertinent than resolving the issue and continuing online with the threads, sooo I often did a lot of uninstalling and reinstalling applications as needed to save disk space. Virus scans, popup security alerts and applications trying to make changes without permissions were the soup of the day with PCillin "Trend Micro Internet Security" Windows Defender and Windows Firewall Security. Long story short; I actually cleared up the problems that were occuring during December's final exam's and holiday rushes of emails and viruses. The autobackup had saved those backups and when I did a backup and restore...I simply restore new problems with old issues and added to the dilemma. Sooooo, looks like backup and restore is out for me. I still didn't notice the most current autobackups from January through February, 2009. I just had some from March 2009. Shouldn't autobackup work to backup and the intervals you have it set for all the time. In any case, the old backups are appearing to be useless and all the March backups are from the last week or so...which have the same issue with the %APPADATA%\. Hey, I am also getting a message from Mozilla that the Chrome Registration folder is missing a shell file. I have went into the "Guest" user's login to open Mozilla. It will open in the "guest" login; but not in the Administrator's login...which is mine. It open's but only after giving me the Chrome Registration error message several times. Then it opens. Just go to start and type "system restore" in the search. Now click on system restore and when it starts select "choose a different restore point". You should now see a list of restore points. Click on the restore point you want to use and go to next. Everything seemed to be working well with it. The issue I'm having with it is that I'm unable to open Adobe Reader 9.0. When trying, it states that an internal error has occurred. When I try to delete it, the following error code comes up, preventing me from proceeding with the uninstallation. Error 1606. Could not access network location %APPDATA%\. I also am unable to open Mozilla Firefox. When I click on the shortcut, it seems it is trying since the round circle appears next to my cursor, but then it just stops. I have uninstalled and then re-installed the program but this doesnt fix the problem. I don't know if this is all related to when I got three programs that I needed for my computer from a reliable source - MS Office 2007, Acrobat, and Adobe Elements. These were not programs I paid for at a store. When trying to install all of these programs, I got the same error code as noted before. Firefox also stopped working on the same night. I read a forum on this site where someone had moved the location of their appdata file and someone wanted to know what happens when they go to Run and type in shell:appdata. I'm not sure if this applies to me as well, but when I try that, a message comes up saying that "Windows cannot find appdata. Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again." If I do a search for Appdata from my Start menu, it is found in C:\Users\Lisa\appdata. Hope someone is able to help me out!
