hie all ...

i wanted to change my mac address and so i followed "how to" by the geek here , but it did not worked for me .... also , i downloaded mac changer , which also did not worked well ....

for macchanger i typed ,

sudo ifconfig ath0 down
sudo macchanger -m 00:11:22:33:44:55
sudo ifconfig ath0 up

after all this , it showed that my mac address is changed ... but after changed mac address , i can not connect to router again ...

any guess ?? am i wrong somewhere ?? ... by the way .. i am using ubuntu hardy ... and wifi chipset is atheros ... ( ah , it can be guessed from ath0 ..)

thanks in advance ...

p.s. ... i am on my home network , so there is no case of wrong password ... also i have not enabled mac restricted access ...

Jack,

Well, I guess the question is:

Did you get the Atheros 802.11 wireless card working yet so you get on-line at different "Hot Spots" or on different network systems ??
That is a MUST if Ubuntu 8.04 is going to be successful against other O/Ses.
Kindest Regards,

Jack,

It you are successful using the MAC solution in my above post, you might want to write up a short How-To because most folks don't know what a MAC number is. Good info to share with all members, especially for those using laptops, which can access "Hot Spots" like Star-Bucks coffee shops, etc.

This is kinda/sorta (new?) Geekness in US (LOL) (LOL).

Sounds like you a have a 50/50 chance after reading all the post.

Here is one I thought was interesting.
=======================
"When i find some network and my wicd won’t connect,
then i go to the console and type:

sudo ifconfig wlan0 down
sudo ifconfig wlan0 hw ether xxxxxxxx

The xxx must be replaced by your mac-adress"

my Dell 1520 came with Vista preinstalled. i'm having a difficult time making the webcam work with any IMs i used. yes i know how to make it work but it is difficult. i'm wondering whether those Dell laptops owners (if anyone here is) whose laptops came shipped with linux preinstalled have the same problems i am having?

if so, what apps you're using to make the IM work with the webcam?

HI, does anyone know how to convert a Physical Linux Mahcine (CentOS) to a virtual machine (VMware ESXi)
VMware's Converter only supports Windows machines. There is products from Platespin , which supports Linux but that is very expensive

Any Suggestions ?

Because allgeek2me is not selling Viagra, WoW gold or claiming to have £££ to give you with no catch, but has instead linked to a good site I have used myself.

Last distro I used was Linux Mint, based on Ubuntu but has extras like DVD playback installed by default. Quite good, but not as stable on my laptop as i might have liked, my research showed me that my laptos hardware isn't well supported by any linux distro though, damn integrated graphics...

Hi - New to this forum but here goes..

Try going to http://distrowatch.com/ look around a bit - on the right panel you'll see a list of popular Linux flavors. Near the top - you'll see a distro called PCLINUXOS. Of course try a few of them - easily download the iso and burn a "live" CD which you can boot from and try out that distro.

We use PCLINUXOS which we believe to be one of the best out there - It installs easily on just about any hardware - it's very customizable - it includes every linux program any of the other distros have and they can be installed through its package manager Synaptic.

I've been watching this distro grow for 2 years - I actually installed it a a few friends and some relatives PC/Laptops. They still use it !! they do everything they did on a Windows machine - hook up IPods - watch movies - play music - etc etc.

Hope this helps.
