thanks for the link. I was wondering about a more windows oriented program, this one requires boot under DOS. Thanks for your input BTW.

CD/DVD uses the operating system generic drivers and does not come with any separate drivers, but it has its firmware that can be updated from its manufacturer website.
In your case it looks like the issue could be a software issue rather than a hardware issue. Try to remove all the disc burning applications from your computer and restart it, then check in "Computer" and in "Device manager". In Device Manager if it shows error run the Microsoft "Fixit" to remove the upper and lower filters. You should also remove any other application which has disc burning feature that you had installed.

Also uninstall and reinstall the drivers from Device manager. Then check if you are able to play any discs and also burn files using the Windows native burning feature or you may check by trying to burn any media file from Windows Media Center or Player.

I recently did a full system recovery on my PC. I backed up my media files on a
Verbatim usb drive. After reinstalling all my files, I cant locate the playlists.
I checked in Limewire and Windows Media Player. All my songs are still there,
but I cant seem to locate the playlists. My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium
v.7. I see a bunch of "jar executable" files in Limewire, but can't open them.
Any suggestions?

Is there any way to prevent Windows 7 Start Menu Search from categorizing results into Documents, Music, Pictures, Control Panel, Programs, etc. The default setting is to show up-to-three results per category. I would prefer to change this so that results are sorted by relevance rather than being divided into file type categories. In other words, I preferred the way this was handled in Windows Vista. Is there a way to get this functionality back?

I am already aware of that I can click on the category header to view more results. That is not what I'm interested in.

What you might try is to run CCleaner to remove a bad registry keys. Be sure to create a back up when asked before you complete the CCleaner repair.

If you're looking to just transfer files back and forth you can setup an ftp server. I like filezilla.

http://filezilla-project.org/

It's free and you can setup accounts for all of the different users. You won't need a dedicated machine you can use your current Windows 7 machine or any one of the others. Your family members will be able to grab files off of your pc that you give them access to and they will also be able to upload files directly to your machine.

Is that what you are looking for?

I recently bought a new computer which has Vista Home Premium as the operating system which is the same operating system that I have on my older computer. (The only difference in computers is the new system is 64 bit and the older system is 32 bit.) Yesterday, for I tried three times to transfer files from my older computer to my new computer using the Windows Easy Transfer program using the Belkin easy transfer cable. Each time the transfer program stopped with an error message indicating that there was not enough disk space on the new computer to continue. Each time the transfer stopped, the transfer program was in the middle of transferring a program called D:\preload/base.wim to the D drive. I read in this forum that this program is used by windows to reboot the system from the D drive when the C drive is not available. After reading this article I understand that this file should not be deleted. However, I would still like to transfer files from my older computer to my new computer using the Windows Easy Transfer program. If I delete this file, will the transfer program transfer the file from my older computer to my new computer? Also, if I cannot delete the file does anybody know what I can do to transfer the files from my older computer to my new or computer using the Windows Easy Transfer program? I don't want to start from scratch with my new computer or try to transfer the files using a thumb drive. Thanks in advance for any and all help with this.

I agree with Santo on this one. IMO there is no such thing as a SIMPLE server, although it can be done fairly cheaply (with an old PC for example) getting it online and making it secure is tough.

Another useful alternative is Logmein Hamachi. This is extremely easy to use and allows you to securely share your data over the internet.

Setting up a server for a personal use will be too costly for a home user. But you can take advantage of free on line data storage services. One such is from Microsoft and it is called SkyDrive. It is very easy to use and it gives 25 GB of storage space for free.

I would like to set up a simple server because me and my family transfers projects, documents and other work to each other via email, Sometimes the projects are too big to send via email so we send them on disc, I live 200 miles from my family so we are not local and if possible my wife would like to store her college work so she can access her files at college.
I would like a simple free set-up if available.
I know nothing about servers, just that I have been told that I could set-up a simple server.
He also said about changing something on my router, I have a SMC Networks (SMC7904WBRA-N)

I have Windows 7 64bit but the other systems that will access it will be XP and Vista 32bit

What do you suggest
Can anyone help please

Bry

Hello whs,

I have a website for a local Community Concert band. I put the selections for our next concert on the site so
the band members can have a sorta play along thing with their music.

Some of the songs (mp3s) as stated above are larger...some by a lot some only slightly than the 10mb
allowed by Soundclick..which is a music sharing site that I have on my website.

I solved my problem by spliting up the songs that were bigger than 10mb...but this isn't the most efficient
method as the band people have to stop and start to get to the end of the song.

I see a lot of sites that will reduce the mp3..but which do I trust.

Thanks for your input.

ray

Here's the site:

what are you trying to upload - symphonies? A normal .mp3 song is 1 to 2 MBs. There are a few .mp3 resizers on the web, but I have no idea how good they are. You could also try to reregister them with a lower bitrate - e.g. 64KB.

well, you could use one of those docks ( http://www.webupd8.org/2009/05/8-windows-docks.html ). Rocket Dock is pretty popular and works with win7 (I tried it). But then I decided to use 2 extra toolbars - one for programs and one for folders. Works pretty well. Make a folder with shortcuts on the desktop, then right click on the toolbar and go to "Toolbars" > New Toolbar > then point to your folder with the shortcuts. And any time you want to add stuff, just drag it into the folder.
