Just wanted to point out that fact before you purchased your components in case you didn't know. :)

Hi everyone,

I have a particular little problem. I have a netbook, and I'm too cheap to buy an external DVD-ROM for reinstalling OS's, so I got an ejectable DVD-ROM drive from my girlfriend's old HP laptop. (Model of the drive is TS-L633) After some tinkering i got the back adapter off and saw that it was slimline SATA, so bought a slimline SATA to USB adapter.

I plug the thing into my netbook, it "installs" the drivers, and it comes up as a Removeable Disk in My Computer, however, it won't read any CD-ROM or DVD I put in the drive. I even plugged it into my Windows 7 rig and nothing even shows up after it installs the hardware. Any ideas?

You simply need to go to the manufacturer of the computer/device and find the driver for the wireless/ethernet adapter you have on your computer. You can do this on any computer, put it on a flash drive, CD, DVD, flopopy disk and tennis shoe network it back to your computer and click on it. It will install. then once the internet is up and running you can do all the drivers you want.

Hi Frank welcome to HTG,

Assuming that your friend is running windows 7 (sorry hatty hehehe) as far as him using his voice to do everything by voice yes he can. i have cereable palsy and was a co-founder of a assistive technology company in nashville so this is right up my ally there's a program called Dragon Dictate http://www.nuance.com/talk/?utm_medium=ps&utm_source=Google&utm_campaign=Dragon&utm_term=dragon_dictate he would have to have a headset with a mic on it and has time to train it with his voice but it can be done. i don't know if he is completely blind or what but if he can see a little he might want to get some screen magnifacation software like zoomtext http://www.aisquared.com/zoomtext/ there are more but Zoomtext is better than most of them.

A couple of days ago I entered a post about this and because of my ignorance of the system a solution was accepted. Anyway here are few comments about
what followed. I used DEVICE DOCTOR to scan the PC with the internet problem. 13 drivers were found to need updates but network or ethernet drivers were not listed. In the "other devices listed" by device manager, 8 items were shown, ethernet controller was one of them. Network adapter was not listed
as having a problem because a 1394 network adapter is installed. DEVICE DOCTOR is an outstanding program because it lets one bypass the existing
scan programs that are out there. However, my problem is the same, I couldn't have downloaded any drivers anyway because of the internet problem. I see
that the pro version permits moving scan results to another computer for download. I assume the downloaded drivers could then be installed offline=anyone
familiar with this ?

Im a newb to linux, was using ubuntu and went to ultimate edition and as far as i new was just ubuntu with a bunch of stuff added for you. i like it however wireless no longer works .i tried the driver applet and it gives me an error message "can't install driver" and to check the jockey log.Im assuming there is a driver conflict and have no idea where to even begin. In windows i might have a chance but in linux i need instructions in "for dummies" format.there has to be a way to remove one driver and put in another ?

I ALWAYS recommend to put the user data into a seperate partition. And for several reasons.

1. Data backup and system backup usually are not necessary at the same time.

2. To backup the data, you have several options. Besides imaging I suggest you look at syncing the data. That is a lot faster.

3. If the system really goes south, a system restore does not effect the data. And unless you make daily images of the one and only big partition, you are liable to lose some data.

4. For the system, imaging is the right procedure. I found that Macrium is the fastest and safest method. If you want to familiarize yourself with Macrium V5 (which is the latest version), use this tutorial. It also includes a tutorial about the recovery steps that one of my friends has contributed. There is also a link to my Fileswap from where you can download the WinPE .iso. That saves you a couple of hours downloading the WAIK.

Btw: with this WinPE CD, you can not only recover from an image but you can also make images. This is handy when you do not want to install Macrium on a system.

If you feel comfortable navigating the registry check this;

Go to Start >> Run and type "regedit" and press enter key.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon.

In this folder, you will find a sub named "shell". Double click it and verify that you have: "explorer.exe" Do you see that?

Oh goodness, a very common issue.

A computer can Boot into Bios if any of 100 or so Bios Settings are OUT of boot parameter.

Examples:

CPU Clock, Memory Timings, Voltage Settings, Devices, Etc, Etc......

This is one way US Over-Clockers know when we can't go any farther; the machine just keeps booting
into Bios Setup Screen. (LOL) (LOL)

Also, If the CMOS Battery is weak and not holding the presets After Bios Setup, the machine will boot
to the Bios on every Cold Boot. (LOL)

NOTE: CMOS 2032 Battery should be replaced Yearly. :) :)

Obvious OP is is not a Builder.

However, when I went from Windows 7 Previews to the Final Windows 7, I was able to use Windows Easy Transfer (Migwiz) to take Files and Settings from the preview, before deleting it and then applying them after the install. Except for having to reinstall programs everything was there, no problem. I assume Windows 8 will have a similar capability.

Why do you want to start explorer.exe? If it shows up in task manager it should be running already. If you have a taskbar it is running.
