Turns out that Messenger 5.1 communicates just fine with 8.5, and they can both coexist on the same machine. Thanks, AGAIN, to ScottW for helping me solve this problem.

Never heard of a "pxmia" CD/DVD drive device.

You (MUST) get one the CD/DVD devices Booting and Reading.

Go into the machine Bios again and set the Boot Order to (CD/DVD First) and (ALL) other Bios settings to Default.

Make sure machine is using Power Adapter and (NOT) battery.

Do (NOT) use the slipstream CD you made.

(USE) your Original Copy of XP Pro Disc to initially setup your system.

Ensure the Disc is Clean by wiping it off with Eye Glass Cleaner or Windex.

Format the drive (Fat32 quick) when / if option comes up. This is just to see if we can get machine going.

Use above procedure and Post Back with results.

@whs

Agreed, there are genuine problems with both Vista and XP... I think most of the anti-Vista hype, especially online, is mostly just the idiots following the popular crowd, trying to be accepted. I distinctly remember all of the anti-XP people that swore they would stick with Win2000 forever... now they are the anti-Vista, pro-XP people.

Actually, my grandfather has a Mac. Last time he came over, he was cursing the fact that you can't change the size of the tiny system fonts, and you have to change each application's content pane font sizes separately (seriously). He's thinking about going back to Windows now.

All,

I posted the following on a News Group some (2) years ago after doing testing for MS because I could see problems with Vista coming down the road. It is a (VERY LONG READ) with many divergent poster opinions so I would ask that any who read it (ENSURE) they read the (COMPLETE) topic thread to the very end.

http://www.vistabanter.com/11510-vista-security.html

At present, I have a (COMPLETELY NEUTRAL) opinion of Vista waiting for things to shake out and also waiting to see if Open Source is finally ready for center stage.

Is it possible to download mail currently accessible only by logging into a Microsoft Exchange Server into an IMAP or POP account in my Outlook Express? My new job requires an email address in this system and it is a huge pain to log on to their Exchange site at home just to check email. Also, if it is possible, how do I locate the settings necessary to set up this new IMAP or POP 'account' in Outlook Express? Thank you for any insight!

Since the post that Budohorseman referred to is very long, I have taken the liberty of copying the essential entry from ScottW for your convenience: I hope ScottW does not mind.
"It's the old GB vs gigabyte. If you look on any modern hard drive box, you'll see in fine print where they say GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. But, for computers a gigabyte is 2^30 = 1,073,741,824
So, if we take your 120 "GB" (120 billion bytes) and divide by 2^30 (1 gigabyte) we get 111.758, hence 111 gigs. Jack's 160 GB is 149.011 gigabytes.
For storage, remember that GB != gigabyte.
EDIT: I should have mentioned that a GB is 10^9 -- that makes it easier to punch into your calculator. You could also save the conversion multiplier, 10^9 / 2^30 = 0.931 to make it easier to compute the next time. You could also factor out the power of 2 from the base 10, but it doesn't make things easier. Man, I had a lotta math in school."

Most like to market and advertise the one that sounds bigger than it actually is (you know it was a guy who came up with that way to describe the size of his hard drive) and actually get away with it.

Here is an old post on this topic with the explanations http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/labeling-or-formating-a-new-harddrive/page/2?replies=44

The problem is that people don't like to change. Why do most people always buy the same make of cars, the same make of washing machines, eat the same foods all the time - because that's what they know. To venture into a new thing means taking risks and making your brain work.
Now with that said, there are some genuine issues with those that cannot run their old XP programs on Vista - and they blame Vista for it rather than the owner of those programs who are the real culprits because they did not provide a Vista version. Dragging all the legacy around is not a good thing for an operating system - Vista has already too much of that and then it is accused of being bloated. Can't have your cake and eat it too.
If the alternatives (e.g. Linux, Mac) were that great, they would have a bigger marketshare and more support. And XP is just your grandfathers Vista. Look at the postings in the Forum - It has it's problems too - and that after all those years.

whs-Very confusing! If you convert decimal to binary (HD) and get a 93% difference with binary being the smaller figure, why is 1G of ram actually 1024 megs or 1.024G with binary being the larger figure? And to further confuse, when people talk of 20G download speed,is that number binary or decimal? My thinking has to have a serious flaw.Maybe a web site recommendation (this is called leaving ones self open)?

Aleeve, first, if you want to "enhance" any picture you should not do it in .jpeg. Convert it to .png ot .tiff with Paint first. With .jpeg you have too much bit loss. Then you can crop it etc. Unfortunately Windows Photo Gallery cannot deal with .png or .tiff. But I think you have Office 2007. Use the Office Picture Manager for that. Enhancements is a different deal. You can brighten them up or change the colour tint (also with Office Picture Manager). But if you want to do any serious work, you should use Gimp2. That has many of the same functions as Photoshop (as far as I can tell from conversations - never used Photoshop myself) but you can download it for free - not for $900. I use Gimp2 a lot. There is an extensive on-line documentation.
PS: I think jack is an expert in this field.

Sarah, it would be terrible if we were all the same. You are a "Schöngeist" and I am an engineer. We just happen to have a different perspective.

@ whs - To me things need to work (what use has a PC otherwise? LOL), but the looks of things are important too.
It is far easier to work in a pleasing environment. People come to greater achievements if they feel good and if the eye is pleased the mind get's stimulated, making you feel better.

And I don't have the time to tinker with things, but I make the time (and for more than just tinkering on the PC, even at the cost of sleep - heck, we can sleep long enough when we're dead. LOL)

And concerning taking risks - life would be pretty boring without them!!

@WHS- yes the D drive would be the recovery partition. sorry for pissin' in your wheaties:). I forgot about the recovery partition because i was in a hurry. I was just leaving crjonhson a quick note, before i left for a meeting, to help him get started. since it had been 3 hr from when he started the topic, and nobody had answered yet.

@crJohnson- sorry for giveing you the wrong information earlier. As WHS said if vista came preinstalled on your computer the D drive is most likely a recovery partition. no, it really doesn't matter what letter is assigned to the new partition (it just looks cleaner to have all your main partitions grouped together.

Does anbody know of a way to zoom in on a picture and enhance it at the same time (auto enhance) and then retake (trim) the picture into a new one, with the same dimensions?
I know this can be done, because my friend has a PS3 and he does it on there
Also, I can zoom in and trim on my camera with a little enhancement, but I cannot think of a way to do it on the computer - photoshop must have a way surely?!

I am stumped!
