That’s not quite as funny as it would appear…in the mid-90s, some sites did require you to enter a valid credit card number to verify your age (as a juvenile, back then, would not be allowed to have a credit card – there was no such thing as a “junior debit card,” with parental supervision and a set spending limit). My, how things have changed!
Actually that’s still an age verification option for users of Second Life (at least users residing in the USA, in many foreign countries it’s illegal to require disclosure of that information for identification purposes, or so I’m told at least).
