And I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve installed Windows updates or Office, had it tell me the installation failed, and then have the Office programs or updates working fine. I think Microsoft is hiring only pessimist programmers. We’re probably not too far off from seeing the message, “your disk is half empty”.

The idle (nominal) voltage on a telephone line is ~48 volts DC, but ~90 volts of 20 Hz AC current is superimposed over the DC voltage already present on the idle line in order to trigger the phone ringer and alert the user to an incoming call.
