If you’re looking for an easy and inexpensive way to add reactive ambient lighting to your computer or HDTV setup, ADALight is a great DIY solution. Check out the video for an impressive demonstration.
Originally introduced by Philip Electronics, Ambilight is a simple system of LED lighting on the back of an HDTV monitor which extends the color scheme of the individual video frames out beyond the actual physical screen. In other words it illuminates the wall behind the screen with the colors on the screen. Fans of the system claim it eases eye strain, enhances enjoyment of movies and television, and looks awesome in the process.
There are a handful of DIY solutions floating around the internet but most of them are rather complicated and require a lot of hardware hacking. This solution, courtesy of ADAfruit Industries, is a great way to roll your own Ambilight clone. Watch the video above to see it in action and then hit up the link below to check out the detailed tutorial. You can order all the parts as a kit from ADAFruit or do your own shopping.
