DIY 3D Projector Creates Snow Globe-like Data Projections

What do you get when you mix a pico projector, a cheap fish eye lens, and a $6 frosted lamp shade? An amazing DIY snow globe-style projection surface perfect for 3D projections of the Earth and other celestial bodies.

Inspired by NOAA’s Science on Sphere design, Nirav Patel made his own spherical projection system using little more than a pico projector, a cheap fish eye lens, a custom printed bracket he created with a 3D printer, and a little home brewed code. The result is a stunning 3D display that’s perfect for displaying projections of the Earth, the Moon, or any other spherical object. Science endeavors aside; this thing begs to be outfitted for some Halloween-related projections like The Haunted Mansion’s head-in-a-jar trick.
