Hack an IKEA Chandelier into a Photography Ring Light

Ring lights aren’t cheap and usually aren’t particularly customizable. This IKEA-based hack is easy, cheap, and highly customizable.

For years the IKEA Kvartil chandelier was a popular base for DIYers to build up into a photography ring light. After the Kvartil was discontinued Iñigo Alonso discovered the Glänsa chandelier system makes just as good a base for a ring light.

If you’re comfortable working with hand tools and wiring a simple lamp assembly, you can easily follow along and customize your Glänsa-based ring light with as few or many lights as you need. Watch the video above to see how it’s done–the video is narrated in Spanish but the steps are all clear regardless of your ability to speak the language.

Jason Fitzpatrick is warranty-voiding DIYer and all around geek. When he's not documenting mods and hacks he's doing his best to make sure a generation of college students graduate knowing they should put their pants on one leg at a time and go on to greatness, just like Bruce Dickinson. You can follow him on if you'd like.
