Game of Thrones – Before and After Special Effects for Season 1 [Video]
The locations, scenery, and buildings in Game of Thrones were awesome to see, but you may be surprised by how much of it was real versus CG visual effects. This spoiler video from BlueBolt lets you see many of the before and after effects from the first season.

An article should be made on how to do this on your own movie clips. Something similar to the photoshop guides, that would be very nice xD. Also, does anybody know which programs do they use for modeling and stuff ?
This is visual effects, not special effects. VFX is CG/post, SFX is stuff like explosions and pyrotechnics.
@Hogar: Well, technically, it is not hard to do these special effects
I believe that the background is a mix of static matte painting (create in Photoshop) with moving elements that can be animated in After Effects – this is a good combination for mostly static scenes, like the one that show King’s Landing from afar.
The rest of them is quite straightforward, for buildings, they are just good 3G models (created by Nuke/Maya/Cinema 4D/3D Max) composed with film clips in After Effects or Final Cut.
For the Dragon I think it’s a combination of Maya and Zbrush (or Mudbox, depends on Studio), composed in After Effects.
So, if you want to do these kinds of effects, you should at least know
1/ Photoshop
2/ After Effects
3/ A 3D program of choice
4/ Zbrush
An of course good artistic ability.
