If you like the idea of Dropbox but you’re not a big fan of entrusting your data security to a third party rolling your own Dropbox-style backup system powered by SSH and rsync is a viable alternative.
Over at Fak3r, they share a straight forward guide to setting up a Dropbox-style syncing system powered by an SSH connection to your home network and the versatile rsync command. The setup is focused on using Linux boxes within your personal and remote networks but since you can access rsync in Cygwin (a Windows port of many useful Linux commands) it seems like it would be easy enough to modify their design to work with Windows machines.
