How It's Made: Optical Lenses [Video]

You’ve likely used lenses in all manner of products: cameras, binoculars, etc. Watch this video to see how glass goes from a block to a highly polished optical lens.

In the above video we see a block of glass go from an unrefined chunk that looks a lot like a hunk of ice to a highly manufactured glass lens destined for a television camera. It’s a detailed process that, as we hear at the end of the video, takes up to six weeks per lens. If you found the lens production process to be interesting make sure to check out how contact lenses are made for more mind blowing manufacturing science.

Jason Fitzpatrick is a warranty-voiding DIYer who spends his days cracking opening cases and wrestling with code so you don't have to.
