How-To Geek
Encrypt Your Google Search Queries
If you’d like to keep your searches between you and Google (and not between you and anyone in between snooping) a secure search is just a simple URL change away.
Next time you head over to Google swap out www.google.com for encrypted.google.com to establish an SSL tunnel between your browser and Google’s servers. This encrypts your searches between you and the big G but doesn’t encrypt your connection once you click on the results and navigate away from Google (and, of course, doesn’t hide your Sailor Moon pic searching from Google itself).

Jason Fitzpatrick is warranty-voiding DIYer and all around geek. When he's not documenting mods and hacks he's doing his best to make sure a generation of college students graduate knowing they should put their pants on one leg at a time and go on to greatness, just like Bruce Dickinson. You can follow him on Google+ if you'd like.

It’s worth noting that Firefox users can accomplish this permanently with the “HTTPS Everywhere” extension. You can also use it to force HTTPS on things like Windows Live Mail, Amazon, Twitter, etc.

Incidentally, you seem not to be able to use Google Shopping whilst you are browsing Google via SSL. It’s kind of annoying. Anyone know if there is a particular reason for this?
Used it when they made it available, now i use scroogle
https://www.google.com also works
Do notice that the URL still contains the search string.
