Stellarium Is a Powerful Open-Source Planetarium App

Stellarium is a cross-platform planetarium app that has to be seen to be believed. Zoom through the night sky, check out constellations from anywhere on (or off) the planet, watch the rotation of the stars throughout virtual days, and more.

Stellarium is one of those open-source applications that makes you marvel at what open-source can accomplish. The interface is intuitive to use, the visuals are stunning, and the ease with which you can zoom through the stars (all 210 million of them cataloged in Stellarium) is amazing. Check out the video below to see it in action.

its a great little program, and worth the download if your into stargazing. it can be a bit heavy on system resources, and may be very sluggish on netbooks. but very good on a laptop

I tested it a year ago and it used a lot of system resources, but looked really nice.

you should give a try to Celestia, it allows you to travel trough space and time to the frontier of the Universe.

I love this program! Never really noticed that it uses a lot of system resources or not to tell you the truth. While I dont have a “top of the line” laptop, its plenty powerful enough to run this with no problems. And as I said to start this post….. I love this program. Beautiful images and its really easy to put in any coordinates you want both celestial and location here on earth. Highly recommended !

Yeah I am trying Stellarium from a year…….. It is wonderful astronomy software. If we have a laptop on our hand we could watch the exact sky. Its really great. Another feature is, we can watch the sky from other planet/satellite like Moon, Saturn, Venus, Gannymede(satellite of Jupiter i think…) and so on……

@MJ: plz dont compare stellarium to celestia…….. Celestia is for different purpose and has a little 3D looks. But Stellarium is wonderful..
