Before the advent of audio dubbing, films released in multiple languages required (polyglot) actors to shoot each scene over for each language (speaking the words of their non-native language phonetically). Another popular option was the use of multiple sets of actors (a set for each language) to work on language specific versions of the film in shifts. A movie released to English, French, and German audiences, then, would require the entire film be effectively filmed three times.
