When I was a kid, I put together loads of model cars and planes, but I always threw out the runners that connected all the pieces together. Never crossed my mind to use them to construct a gigantic robot.

Yes, let’s call a Gundam a gigantic robot. Let’s not use the actual terminology here, but use the proper terms when there is talk of Star Wars.

According to Wikipedia they are, in fact, robots. Also, most people have seen Star Wars. Seemed like a logical choice.
