The brilliant Java programmer Charles Nutter, responsible for JRuby and loads of open-source goodness, goes into detail on his blog about the Oracle v Google lawsuit over Android and Java patents. It’s a huge article, and very technical, but it’s a great read if you really want to understand what’s going on.
As you’ve probably heard by now, Oracle has decided to file suit against Google, claiming multiple counts of infringement against Java or JVM patents and copyrights they acquired when they assimilated Sun Microsystems this past year. Since I’m unlikely to keep my mouth shut about even trivial matters, something this big obviously requires at least a couple thousand words.
His conclusion? Patents suck, and these are overly broad and not terribly applicable.
