The canonical explanation for why there are so many very similar humanoid-like races in the Star Trek universe is, according to Star Trek: The Next Generation episode 146 “The Chase”, is that an ancient but unidentified humanoid race seeded most of the known universe with their DNA in an attempt to preserve their species; practically speaking, however, it’s a lot easier to do alien makeup when everyone looks just about human.
