Ask the Readers: Do You Use Social Network Apps?

socialmedia

This week we’re taking a look at social networks. Do you use social network apps to increase the usefulness of social networks like Twitter, Facebook, and others?

Every social network service is accessible via the service’s web interface; it’s the most common way to use social networks—you visit the site, login, and enjoy. Many people enhance their experience by using applications that add in extra features, allow them to sort and view social media posts in new ways, and otherwise make it easier to stay on top of their social network experience.

Do you use third party apps? Official apps released by the service itself? Eschew apps all together and stick with the web interface? Sound off in the comments with your experiences.

  1. dima

I never saw a point in using any social network.

  2. Paulo Palopoli

TweetDeck on Windows, Tweeter Oficial app on my Android.

  3. Aether

I don’t even use social networks, let alone social network apps.

  4. MJ

I do not use any social network.

The only use I’ve considered at this time is, given the large amount of people I know with a Facebook account, create one for me, lock it as much as possible and then use it only for chat with Digsby, since most of them don’t use anymore other chat services like Windows Live Messenger or GTalk.

  5. jon_hill987

I’m with Aether and Dima on this one. I don’t use social networks. They are for people who want to feel more important than they really are by telling the world things no one really wants to know.

  6. jocko

    No.

Tried Facebook, deleted my account. Tried Twitter, but haven’t logged in in several months and will likely delete my account soon. I wish that I could uninstall the Facebook, Twitter and YouTube apps from my android phone, but Google doesn’t allow them to be removed.

  7. Andy

I would have to use a social network first.

  8. Danny

I use HootSuite for my Twitter needs. I follow waaaay too many people that organizing my lists into columns makes it much easier to read. I prefer webapps to anything else as it gives me access to everything I need regardless of what computer I’m on.

  9. Jay Wiese

    I don’t use computers.

  10. Brodiemac

I find Twitter a pointless application. I do use Facebook as it has gotten me back in touch with old friends and neighbors and helps to collaborate & co-ordinate much more easily with my close friends and family. I use FriendCaster for Android as it far and beyond better than the stock Facebook app.

  11. Gene

I dont use any social network……..

  12. Alex

Don’t use – and that raises one of my concerns about Windows 8 where MSNBC and other sources have said such things as “social media is woven through every aspect of the Windows 8 operating system”.

  13. catester

I use HootSuite on computers and on my android phone for Twitter. I don’t use it for Facebook, although I do use Facebook to stay in touch with non-techie friends and with my family. I just look at Facebook in a web browser.

  14. Doctor Bill

    NO.

  15. Rascalion

For Facebook, no. The native apps are generally suffcient for what I use it for.

For Twiiter I use Twitterific on the Mac and Tweetbot on the iPhone.

  16. Stephen

lol @ all the people who seem so proud to say they don’t use social networking. I use Facebook, Twitter and Google+ partly to keep up with friends and family but mostly to promote my personal training business. I use Friendcaster and Tweetcaster as well as the Google+ app. It allows my clients to reach out to me with questions and using the apps on my phone allows me to respond instantly. I also like it because it saves me money on my phone bill since I don’t have to use a lot of minutes are pay for large text message bundles.

  17. Mohan

    I use gwibber.

  18. Tschet

I have tried dozens of apps for social networks. I’ve tried single purpose apps, multipurpose and most of the big universal apps and services for social networks. Echelon for twitter on the iPad is the only one I regularly use.
A number of people here commented that they don’t use social media. Is following and commenting on blogs so different?

  19. KatsumeBlisk

@Jocko, Google isn’t the one preventing removal of those apps; it’s your phone’s manufacturer. They aren’t part of Android.

@Those saying social networks are for people full of themselves, I use social networking mainly to get news. Every major site has a Twitter account, such as How-To Geek. I tweet about my tech, phone or computer. Is it really that bad to share what you’re interested in? There’s a difference between sharing that you’re eating pasta for dinner and sharing that you discovered a new app for Android.

I use TweetDeck on Windows and Plume on Android. I don’t use an app for Facebook because I’m not on there enough. When I jump on G+, I’ll use the Android app for that.

  20. Two Replies

No do use social network apps.

  21. Aaron

I have the Google+ and Facebook apps. Have I ever used them? Google+ I opened once to see the UI and Facebook I’ve opened twice and find them both useless. This is coming for a connected youth who is “supposed” to want to update my “feed” that I just say a yellow car that made me giggle….

  22. Jack

I use the official Facebook app on my Android, but apart from that i normally just use the websites.

But i did read this article using the news app on windows 8 :D

  23. Jon

I don’t use social networks nor social apps either (unfortunately i am forced to for work :( ). I find them compromising the security and limiting personal freedoms.

  24. Asian Angel

I switch back and forth between using the web interface and desktop apps…

For the web interface I use Firefox (with Greasemonkey and some nice little scripts). On Ubuntu I use Hotot while I use either Twhirl or Seesmic Desktop on Windows (depending on my mood). ^_^

  25. Intersted Owl

this just goes to show that most of the geek community don’t socialize nor have the need to use social networks due to limited number of social contacts. Twitter keeps me in touch of all my gaming buddies and what they’re up to also, a lot of businesses (that i frequent) are using twitter to offer discounts and promotions. Facebook got replaced by Google+ for me, all family members, coworkers, business partners, old school friends, and other RL contacts keep in touch there. Steam has a fairly good gaming social network for my pc games.

Im not on them 24/7 but I use them fairly effieciently. You wont be seeing me tweeting about what kind of frogurt i made at a uSwirl. But you WILL see me using twitter for bragging rights on CoD amongst my buddies.

  26. Ringman

I use MetroTwit on PC and Echofon on mobile.

  27. Javier

I use the Facebook and Google+ Android apps – I don’t have much use for twitter…
I can respect those that say that they don’t use social networks, but if most of your family lives in your native country and you’re 2’500 km away from them you’d like to be a bit up to date on how they are and what’s going on there…

  28. Triolith Entertainment

If your a business person and don’t use social networks such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter etc your missing out on a lot of opportunities. Almost all our contacts have been done via social networks. And yes we use both Hootsuite and Tweetdeck. Personally i use Hootsuite due to it’s awesome features.

  29. George

For Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google Buzz (when it was around) I use TweetDeck. Now that I have a Google+ account, I use SGPlus to update Facebook while updating Google+.

I am waiting for TweetDeck to have an add-in for Google+.

  30. Stu

I dont use Social website let alone the apps that go with them. I cannot for the life of me understand why people want to publicise all their details and activities and even less the others that want to know…TWEET sitting at home now. Whoopdeedoo

  31. Hisa

I use Twitter for my own fun. I use Facebook because of peer pressure. Oh, right, apps! Yeah I use the free ones with basic functions. I prefer touting my superiority on Twitter in the comfort of my home and riduculing my friends and family in private. I go to too many public places with my phone! ^^

  32. Wayne

I have Twitter installed on my iPad and Seesmic for Windows on my desktop but I never use them. For Facebook and Google+, I just visit the websites. Doesn’t matter if I am on the iPad, laptop, or desktop.

  33. Eric

I use to use Twitter a lot to keep up on industry news. In order to sort through the insane amount of frivolous information, I tried out Digsby and Seesmic. I had a lot of problems getting Digsby to work and I didn’t use the FB module. I tried a few of the web lookups that would sort through it all, but I kept coming back to Seesmic. Eventually I switched to Seesmic Look. I very good experiences with it. The only downside was the authentication in the API seem to take a crap every once in a while. I’m sure they’re fixed any auth bugs since I’ve stopped using Twitter altogether.

I only use FB at home and I don’t use any apps to sort my news feed.

  34. Roshnal

I use TweetDeck chrome app in my Windows & Linux machines. So far I only use Twitter as i really don’t see any point in Facebook. But now I may try out the Google+ app and Google+.

  35. XXX

I do not use social media such as twitter, Google, or Facebook. Facebook is security risk because of its ToS/ private policies changing so damn much. Google is too considering it is a huge corporation.

Also such social sites seems to restrict freedom as you can express yourself and then get fired, arrested, etc cause of what you said or did.

If you want to talk to friends there are safer ways.

  36. Larry Thiel

I’ve never seen any point in using them especially given some of the risks. Emails and groups sem to provide all my social needs and if I want to talk in real time I prefer the phone.

  37. J00

The only social network I am on is Twitter and that is only for contests and to follow a select few of youtubers for updates when there are videos posted. I never actually post to say what I am up to because I find it unnecessary. The native app on the Blackberry is sufficient for my needs. My actual friends can contact me through any messenger on my meebo app or through *gasp* actually calling me. :)

When the day comes when I have to ask…( plead ? ) with people to “be my friend” is the day I quit computers…Has anyone noticed how intrusive they have become? I was reading the Times when the “facebook” ad overshadowed it…I had to join to be able to finish what I was reading…(never finished the read…..
Ask yourself…”Is this what I am reduced to? Gotta ask for people to befriend me” ?
Yes I joined Facebook some time ago….Figured on quitting after looking around…SORRY you cannot quit….so be careful what you write….it will be there when the world ends…went back one day and so help me there there were 30 people asking to be befriended….I NEVER met any of them…Tried again to wipe me off Facebook….I guess the world hasn’t ended….But I have faith….One day a giant lightening storm will wipe out F’book and there will be millions of friendless people…LOL….
I guess Twitter would shoot this reply down only allowing 100 or so characters….LOL….Whaja say English teachers lets revolt….
    GG

  40. GaGator

I use ShareMeNot to block Facebook and Twitter from any webpage I visit w/Firefox.

PS – If Windows 8 is to be centered on social networking, I’ll finally move to Ubuntu.
    .

  41. jewatso

NO! NO! NO! Too much like Russian Roulete

  42. wagonman

I price my privacy & integrity enough to never use a common public network. Too much Russian Roulette.

  43. Bob-El

From the onset I saw Facebook as a huge time-waster. Twitter sounds too much like bird talk to me. Call me old-fashioned but I don’t care to have everyone know what I had for breakfast, what I did/saw yesterday, photos of me hammered to the gills or how many books I’ve read on my Kindle since I got it and whether I like them or not. Who cares, really?

  44. tommy2rs

My stance on social networks is that if you use them you deserve everything you get. So no, no apps.

  45. astral_cyborg

I’ve stopped using social networks and I feel relieved ^^

  46. Bitzer

I absolutely abhor social networking – I’m neither paranoid nor antisocial, but I’ve never felt the need to find out what every casual acquaintance is doing or thinking, much less the desire to share the minutiae of my daily life with every Tom, Dick or Harry.

  47. Figgis

Social networks belong in the complete waste of time department. People put far to much information on them and then wonder why their I.D.s get stolen.

  48. cam2644

    No

  49. larryi8

I don’t use any electronic social networking.
HTG has already reported that hacking into these sites has been increasing.
I don’t want to jeopardize my privacy or security by joining.
My social networking is face-to-face at parties and family get-togethers

  50. knightspawn5

I dont use social networks must less the apps. It’s a complete waste of time. I have friends in real life, I dont need 1,000,000 people bothering me with chatter……

  51. pocho_x

TweetDeck on Windows and ubersoccial & fb for blackberry.

  52. miry-mir

    NO. value my time

  53. HTG Reader

No social networks, and therefore no apps. I don’t have a so-called “smart” phone either, and nor do I want one.

I’m not a “geek” either but do consider myself something of a bookworm. That said, I won’t waste my time or deteriorate my language skills on Twitbook or SpaceCase or BoobTube or whatever these so-called social sites happen to be. I find a painful irony in the fact that there are internet sites (like GoodReads) specifically for bibliophiles, and that Henry Thoreau has a FB Fan Page.

There’s an app for just about everything, and everyone…except me. :)
