Live hyperlinks in Outlook are opened in the default browser by pressing and holding the “Ctrl” button and clicking the link. This is the default setting, but it can be changed if you would rather single click on a hyperlink to follow it.

To access this setting, click the “File” tab on a “Message” window.

NOTE: You can also click the “File” tab on the ribbon on the main Outlook window.

01_clicking_file_on_message_window

Click “Options” in the list of items on the left, whether you accessed the “File” tab from the main Outlook window or from the “Message” window.

02_clicking_options_from_message

If you opened the “Outlook Options” dialog box from the “Message” window, the “Mail” option will already be active. Otherwise, click “Mail” in the list of options on the left.

On the right side of the “Compose messages” section, click the “Editor Options” button.

04_clicking_editor_options

On the “Editor Options” dialog box, click “Advanced” in the list on the left side, again, whether you accessed the “File” tab from the main Outlook window or from the “Message” window.

NOTE: There are a few more options available on the left side of the “Editor Options” dialog box if you opened the “Outlook Options” dialog box from the “Message” window. If you originally accessed the “Outlook Options” dialog box from the main Outlook window, you will only see “Display” and “Proofing.”

In the “Editing options” section, select the “Use CTRL + Click to follow hyperlink” check box so there is NO check mark in the box.

Click “OK” to close the “Editor Options” dialog box.

07_clicking_ok_editor_options_outlook

You are returned to the “Outlook Options” dialog box. Click “OK” to close it.

Now, when you move your mouse over a hyperlink in an email message, the cursor immediately changes to a hand and you can click once to follow the link.

NOTE: Just like in Word, turning off this option prevents you from being able to simply click on hyperlink text to put the cursor there. Clicking once on the link will open it in the default browser. You must use the arrow keys to move the cursor into a hyperlink.
