Go Directly to Desktop Mode in Windows 8 on Login (Without Installing Extra Software)
A lot of people are unhappy with being forced to interact with the new Start Screen in Windows 8 first thing once they have logged into their system. But there is a quick and simple work-around to go directly to Desktop Mode that does not require installing extra software or making changes to your system.
The first thing that you will need to do is make sure that the Desktop Tile is in the left uppermost position on the Start Screen as seen here. Once the tile has been moved to that position you will need to restart/reboot your system.

Once your system has restarted and you are back at the Login Screen, type in your password but do NOT click on the Arrow Button or tap the Enter Key.
Instead of tapping the Enter Key simply press down on it and hold it down until you see the regular desktop. Keep in mind that you may see the Start Screen become visible for just a short moment as it is being bypassed for the desktop.
Note: Pressing and holding the Enter Key down not only logs you in, but ‘automatically activates’ the left uppermost tile (the Desktop Tile you moved earlier) and gets you straight to the desktop.

That is all there is to it…no extra software or changes to your system required!
Note: You can download the Might & Magic Heroes wallpaper shown in the screenshots here.

Thanks for sharing, is there a way to do this automatically so you don’t have to hold the Enter key?
Excuse me for incorrect grammar or spelling, I’m a non-native speaker of the Englsih language.
iI have Windows 8 nstalled on a laptop, I use a shut down gadget on the desktop and hibernate out. Next log on Bingo!”!
Bring back W2000 so we who work for a living, CAN!
Not sure if shortcut/exploit or….
Sounds like it’s not doing anything special. It’s just showing the start screen, and setting focus to the first object in the list. Therefore as soon as it loads the start screen, it’s just getting your “enter” command and executing it, resulting in showing the desktop. Nothing special at all.
There is a proviso to this working.
You must not have setup automatic login via the control userpasswords2 option.
However, if you have, then just pressing enter when you see the tiles works to get you immediately to the desktop.
I never knew the importance of the upper left tile, so this really helped me. Thank you
Oh! So, that’s what your name is, “Akemi Iwaya”! Good to know, Asian Angel! :)
Thank you. Just so sad that some people have to deride your efforts to help simple folk like me!
