Build an 8-Bit Computer from Scratch

If you’re curious about the inner workings of your computer and want to get a very hands on view of exactly how it works, this scratch-built 8-bit computer project is a great (if involved) way to get a closer look.

Kyle Hovey, the guy behind the site 8_Bit_Spaghetti (the project blog for his 8-bit build), wanted delve into the bones of computing by building his own tiny computer. By using a breadboard, transistors, and NVRAM he was able to build and program a functional 8-bit computer. It isn’t that Kyle is covering brand new ground (building simple computers like this is and old trick in the electronics and computer hobbyist arena) but his build guide is heavily documented and makes a great follow-along-guide for those interested in learning more.

Jason Fitzpatrick is a warranty-voiding DIYer who spends his days cracking opening cases and wrestling with code so you don't have to. If it can be modded, optimized, repurposed, or torn apart for fun he's interested (and probably already at the workbench taking it apart). You can follow him on if you'd like.
