RUIN: A Post-Apocalyptic Short Animation [Video]

If your coffee has failed to perk you up this morning, this action-packed post-apocalyptic animation–a trailer for a work-in-progress CGI movie–most certainly will.

Courtesy of Oddball Animation, RUIN is a polished bit of animation that could easily stand alone as a short film.  The studio is in the process of shopping it around to extend it into a full length movie which, if it looks as good as it does in the short form, will be worth the price of admission.

Jason Fitzpatrick is warranty-voiding DIYer and all around geek. When he's not documenting mods and hacks he's doing his best to make sure a generation of college students graduate knowing they should put their pants on one leg at a time and go on to greatness, just like Bruce Dickinson. You can follow him on if you'd like.

“Haven Research Facility B” is evidently located in north Central Florida:

That explains all the bugs, at least.

This started out to be VERY interesting. I was fascinated to see how the buildings were covered with growth. The animation was good.

    Some problems (in my opinion):

    1. When the person is looking into the safe and hears something, why didn’t he go into the trees for cover? He did have time before the first ship was above him.

By him running, rather than taking cover, caused him to be a moving target. Realistically, the first craft should have been able to mow him down with a spray of bullets almost immediately.

Then, having a second ship arrive and not be able to bullet the target is almost too unbelievable.

    2. The race from the first ship took waaaay too long, almost 5 minutes on the video. I clicked ahead because it became boring.

Overall the graphics and animation were good, but the motor bike race was too drawn out and unrealistic.

    Shit! That was awesome.
Soapy, don’t be such a turd and a nitpicker. Just enjoy it.
I’d play the game AND go to the movie.

…so you think that this would have been a more interesting animated short if he had ran to the trees for cover & just waited there ?

  5. mark

because he would have left a heat trail and would have been a sitting dead duck
if you looked carefully you would have noticed the old rust and bad shape of the crafts which may imply old out of date hard and software affecting the targeting computers
I agree the race was a little too long
the animation was excellent and the graphics were really awesome

As entertaining as it was I just couldn’t get past the almost fake qualities of that human. He (I assume it was a “he”) seemed oddly shaped and out of proportion. I would almost bet there is a Japanese anime artist in this somewhere since since you just don’t see such emaciated characters with such oddly long legs from any other animators. (Sorry Japan, but you guys just suck when it comes to realistic animation.)

I don’t know if James Cameron is ready to make another Avatar movie or not. And I think George Lucas has probably dropped out of the movie making business in favor or producing endless Star Wars junk for the rest of his natural life. So forget shopping this to any of the Hollywood big wigs. That is, unless “The Barbarian”, “Meathead” or “Oopie” are looking for a project.

What’s really necessary – and so badly needed in Hollywood – is some good writing! You could almost do a stick figure film if the story was any darn good. But since that isn’t likely, I predict this clip might end up in another remake of “The Last Man on Earth” or another remake of “The Time Machine” or possibly (and more likely) another futuristic cop movie.

My advice to Oddball Animation: Develop a (good) story and finish the film yourself. Just please don’t make another cop movie.

Loved the overgrown buildings. That first shot, rising up above the freeway was very dramatic. However, the movement of the main character, particularly when he’s running for his bike early on? Oh dear. Let’s just say it’s less than convincing.

That was a great short !!!
I will deffo be looking for the full length feature if & when it comes out :)
You could just figure out what the story was about in the first 20 or so seconds which is what i like.

Artistic license in animation is subjective & open to creative interpretation. Reality & fantasy can, and does mix to many degrees. I find that this animation succeed at displaying this on many levels. Is it perfect, does the art succeed in portraying perfect reality?, no…but that’s likely not the intention of the creators, artists & developers here. As far as story is concerned, This is a short, which only highlights a very brief aspect of an entire project. I find that it has succeeded in doing so. Good job !

Dude! I’m hooked. I want to see more!

guys , I’m waiting for the video game, I’m sure that one will follow . I’m definitely gonna “buy” the cracked version of it …

soapy – I bet your a Whovian, or a trekkie. Was the “Comic Book Guy” fashioned on you?

Anonymous – “Sorry Japan, but you guys just suck when it comes to realistic animation.)” Yes every westerner has the body of Dwayne Johnston (the rock) or Vin Diesel.

“I don’t know if James Cameron is ready to make another Avatar movie or not. And I think George Lucas has probably dropped out of the movie making business in favor or producing endless Star Wars junk for the rest of his natural life”

Another couch critic nerd who knows the mind of Hollywood directors . I wonder if he knows that there are more than 2 directors in Hollywood. It is funny to see people get uptight about the non “realism” in “Science Fiction’ All the while not knowing what FICTION means.

“What’s really necessary – and so badly needed in Hollywood – is some good writing! ” your thinking of nerds messiah Gene Roddenberry aint ya?

“My advice to Oddball Animation: Develop a (good) story and finish the film yourself. Just please don’t make another cop movie” I finally found out a couch critics version of a fart – an opinion. Hot air, stinks and people take about the same amount of notice of it.

Ted – ” does the art succeed in portraying perfect reality?, no” No i don’t see many trees growing out of sky scrapers maybe it is a bit harder to work that out where you live.

Great Idea for a movie, great clip. Unfortunately you will always get more criticism on the net than compliments.

    @Flynn

are you always such a douchebag, or do you just act that way out of frustration ?

  14. Bruce

    @se23

Flynns comment was tame compared to what the others had commented about. So bagging the shit out of something based on an uneducated opinion is ok?
The internet is full of couch critics, obnoxious, arrogant people putting others down and having opinions on subjects they know nothing about. I suppose this is the only place they can express their opinion because no one will listen to them in real life and they cant get hit.
